I heard something about NXEA wanting to use EMUs as part of the London - Norwich Intercity service.

Does anyone know anything about that?

Theres rumours about NXEA wanting to use 444 type EMUs. Not sure if its true, but it wouldnt suprise me if NXEA did as thats how most TOCs are heading now...

More 321s from December (ex LM quality 321/4s) and "additional capacity on the London - Norwich route" is quoted in he press release which was recently released, might even be quoted at the start of this thread. Putting two and two together, there will be some very unhappy Anglian commuters!!

I'm not sure it will come to it.

Having read the press release, Norwich was only one of a number of destinations mentioned. It strikes me that it's just lazy reporting rather than any firm statement of intent. Equally it could be hiding something else with regard to rolling stock deployment. Either way there are too many rumours and not enough fact, so I'm waiting to see precisely what will happen with regard to these former LM "Bins".

Putting 321s on Norwich trains?

Why not 360s and 321s on 360 operated routes?

Which is probably more likely.

I can't see why it would be wrong to introduce EMUs to London - Norwich services. In terms of distance it must be about the same as London to Kings Lynn, Peterborough, Birmingham or Bournemouth and all of those have some or all of their services operated by EMUs. (It's alot less than London - Crewe which now has 350s on some services :D)

It shouldn't be 321s (or anything with 3+2 seating) for that kind of long distance work, but 2+2 seated new builds would be ideal.

I agree with that, something 2+2 would be fine, but 321's never!!! The main things im thinking of are on-board facilities; I know the cafe bar aint great on our Mk IIIs, but its better than nothing. Also, I cant see why in the world anyone would want to pay for FC on a 321... but if the EMUs are decent, then that wouldnt be a problem.
Oh oh, and if they put EMUs on london - norwich services, do you think they would make them DOO?

444's will be ideal for the long term replacements of MK3's, but I'd say they'd unfortunately go for electrostars.

electrostars wouldnt really do it i dont think. 444s would be good i suppose... If it was up to me, (and I know it isnt) Id get them to make like an electric 10 car 180... if only :D

444s have some sort of buffet on them don't they?

Just becuase existing varients of Electrostars aren't seen as "suitable" (and as pointed out, there's similar/longer commuter routes run 365s, 350s etc), surely if a customer wanted a varient with carriage end doors (rather than 1/4 & 3/4) then they'd be able to design such a thing? After all, there's already two different door designs, and 4 (5 even) front ends available.

444s have a hutch for the trolley which is laughingly called a buffet. But it could be extended quite easily to provide better quality catering facilities.

344s (or whatever their class no would be) would make sense, rather than anything Electrostar, a class I've always seen as a bit lacklustre. That said, if you're going to order some 23m 344s, can we have some 444s too please. ;)

I've been told when they recieve the extra 321's, they will free up a 12car 360 for a london-norwich evening peak service.

Something being missed here is that in peak hours the london Norwich has a lot of 1st class passengers, currentlt none of the EMUS could cope with the 1st class demand.

If i remember correctly, i think a 360 has 8 FC seats at eigther end. so thats 16 per 4car set, making 48 FC seats per 12 car set...

now that I think about it, thats not really much, is it. Thats not even one MkIII FC carriage.

I wouldnt mind that though. :D Id be well happy with that

Cl360's are not currently cleared to run beyond Ipswich.

I didnt think they were. but sadly, 321s are :(

I know this is all just hype and none of it will probably ever happen but how long would it take to get a train clear for a route?

Prob won't happen, not before december anyway. 360's and 321's run on pretty much the same routes but does anyone know any other routes 321's can run but 360's can't? I know 360's can run on the braintree branch but restricted to 40mph rather that 50mph(Not sure why). You must really love those 360's SqUaShIe P! I'm assuming that either some norwich drivers sign 321's or colchester/clacton drivers sign norwich but using the 360's adds to the confusion.

I fail to see why units to Norwich is seen as a bad thing? There are other services in the country of equal distance with such stock

its not even that, id like anything with powered doors. Its just that 360s are a good bit newer then the 321s so i would prefer them

I dont really think it would be bad, but i think it is better with loco-hauled stock; more first class, 2+2 seating in standard and 2+1 in FC, an actual buffet carriage...

having an EMU would just mean less FC, possibly less comfort, it might have a trolly service but not cafe bar, even if it did have a trolly, it wouldnt beable to travel the whole train, conductors would have the same problem of not being able to walk the length of the train (as 360s and 321s dont have gangway doors at the end of each set) as I said earlier, the only advantage I can see is having powered doors.
