Alternatively we could always have a British company that designs and builds locomotives...in Britain. Too radical?

Any possibility of a British owned company building and designing locomotives (or even any rolling stock) in Britain died with the privatisation of BREL.

On the subject... has anyone heard anything else about this order?
I know that most of the magazines have made mention of it, with tRM (iirc) saying the rumour had originated from someone in the US with an association with EMD/PR,

I only ask, as we are getting closer and closer to the reported "deadline" for construction of locos before the change in emission requirements...

Confirmation today that a deal has been concluded with Electric Motive for 8 new class 66 locos due over here some point next year from the US.

That's disappointmenting . I was hoping for a new design .:(

What, like a Powerhaul? :P

I can't believe that they are still building Sheds after all these years

I can't believe Bombardier are still building *Stars after all these years :P

These'll be the last 66s, I suppose. Maybe the 116+140 '377/8' will be the last 377s.

The GM 710 engine does not sound as good as the GE Powerhaul.

At tickover the GM 710 is actually quite irritating. The GM 635 in the Class 57 sounds more throaty and powerful even though it's been derated.

The 66 engine sounds almost like its 'ringing' at idle, whereas the class 56 engine sounds more like a drum.
