When I first started reading it in 1963, I didn't realise what a recent venture it was. Thanks, Modern Railways, for (in my case) 49 years of good, detailed honest journalism.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Is it out yet? Thought it wasn't due till the 28th (4th Friday).

Dropped through my letterbox in the post early this morning. This is why I took the annual subscription opportunity of the 14 for 12 issues last December (plus the free London Underground book) rather that going to W H Smith every month in Macclesfield, when you could never tell when they were going to display it on their shelves.

This seems to be an advantage given to people who have an annual subscription for Modern Railways.

It's fairly common throughout the magazine industry for subscribers to get the latest issue several days (or even a bit longer) before it hits the shelves.

Indeed, both Rail and Today's Railways (UK at least) come 3 or 4 days before they are meant to be released onto shop shelves. IIRC Rail comes in the post on Saturday and is released publicly on Tuesday, with TRUK coming on the Friday before the Monday it's due out.

I have Steam World and Railway Magazine 3 days before they're in the newsagents.

I seem to remember its roots go back further than that, as it started life as "Trains Illustrated"
However, with its rebirth as "Modern Railways" it became sharper with a more commercial and technical focus.

As you say, it's now a thoroughly good read. I usually start with Alan Williams and then Roger Ford.

Subscribers usually get thiers before the bookshops - Rail is a good example. Last months Modern Rlys was in IA W'loo on the Tuesday before it was due on the Friday. I may check tomorrow as going to London after work for the A stock.
