The opening windows on Class 150s, in pre COVID times, they’d fly open when going through tunnels, passengers would then waste time trying to shut the damned things, only for them to continually do the same throughout the journey

Not sure if it's been mentioned but people watching films with sound on. There are a few parents who think it's acceptable to allow their children to watch a film on a device and subject the rest of the carriage to it.

The better Devon city
I was on the H&C line a couple of years ago, and two women ended up sitting opposite me. One proceeded to paint her nails, and the other one cracked open a tub of Wasabi takeaway. That was a fun 15 mins.
This reminds me, if you ever have to go on the Central line, try and find an alternative

Or ones who use earphones which fit poorly that they leak the noise. Normally Apple standard ones

The aim of this thread is a bit like the one in the General Discussion section, but for trains specifically. Any irritating feature is welcome!

I'll start off with the classic "some incompetent at the depot ordered the wrong colour temperature florescent tubes, but they're using them anyway". As illustrated by Coach D in 220004:
Tiny windows on class 390s... great stock but when it gets busy it can be so claustrophobic

From seated positions they are wonderfully cosy though. The claustrophobia generally sets in when you're standing and realise you can't see anything!
It's one of many ways I feel the pendolinos massively prioritise the seated accommodation over standing passengers, though considering the services they run that isn't necessarily a problem.

Surely then the Voyagers would be the worst offenders, since they are more likely to suffer from overcrowding, and have the same sort of windows.

Voyager windows are almost twice the height of Pendolino ones. They have the same seats, so the size difference in the windows becomes quite clear if you put interior photos of them side by side!

Ridiculous 1st Class arrangements, such as those found on 465/9s and 700s...

Looks like an ironing board with one of my nans dish cloths placed on it...

Voyagers have very large windows indeed.
Indeed, almost too big at times - I quite like a window seat, but less so in summer as you can feel like your starting to fry under them. I still feel the perfect size if that of a Mk3.

When you sit down, plug your phone in and...nothing!

It seems to be a common issue on the Harrogate (ex ScotRail) 170 stock in particular for some reason, where if you play musical chairs for a bit you will eventually find a working socket
Riding on a GWR 80x yesterday and my phone displayed "Low Power". Got my charger out and tried to plug it in, but failed miserably. Finally took to laying on the floor and managed to plug it in. Great idea to have power sockets available, but could have been made more accessible.

Yes... I don't see why they don't put sockets on the back of seats so as to be facing the user, which would surely make more sense.

I like the way it's been done on the Greater Anglia Stadler units where the sockets are below the seats, between the two seats. What is clever is that sockets have been put in "upside down" (i.e. the neutral is at the bottom) which makes it much easier to plug in when sitting in the seat, as the natural movement to plug in flips the plug through 180deg so the neutral is at the bottom (if that makes sense!). Much easier than having to do a conjurer's trick, which is what is needed in many other cases.

Whilst we're on the subject of power sockets and irritations, the ones in an IET freeze the screen on my phone, to the point of it being unusable while plugged in. That is appalling design by Hitachi and makes you wonder what else is dubious electrically on those units.

Because then you'd have to fit socketss to takes in the table bays. And seats that are back to back would need sockets in the back. So you end up with 2 seat versions and tables with sockets, which is more expensive than plain tables and 1 variety of seat.

1st class on trains full stop. Second class is rammed, with people pressed up against windows, and three people are sat in first class. Totally wasted space.

Oh I don't know. I had a very pleasant trip back from Westbury last summer as the sole first class passenger. I was very attentively supplied with tea and biscuits :D.
Was cheaper than a standard return too.

Same here right now on a XC service from Nottingham to Reading. Just me in coach A. Cheeky bacon roll as well as plentiful supplies of tea here

Interior doors on 444s which just randomly remain open. Some of them remain open some of them open and shut (this was nowhere near where the guard was)

You could always just keep 1 carriage for first. Still wasted space, but less so, and first class customers are still catered for.

Airlines change a section from first to pleb class by adjusting the seating (Thy have a way of making a 3 into a 2) and moving a curtain. So maybe someone needs to think of a way to declassify some first provision when first class demand is low and 2nd class is high. But of course the 2nd class passengers would not get the 1st class service

I was thinking more like Transpennine back when they had just three car 185s running solo and half of the front carriage was first. Two and a half carriages for everyone else.

I think first class has more demand on long distance cross country type routes, but still ends up over provisioned at times it seems.

Also, stupid signs that are not formal and are cringeworthy, like Virgin Trains and SWT use to have in their toilets."Please don't flush dreams, hopes, etc... ".

The last place I want to be inspired or have an uplifting quote is sat on a blocked train bog that resembles a metal vase full of...

LNER seem to have busier 1st class than standard at the moment.

The extra space and social distancing of 1st class is certainly appealing in Covid times, indeed more so than the "fripperies"

Avanti is a good example of long distance travel. They replaced some first class with standard premium, and it's a much better set up.

Not really in the way you're thinking though - airlines like BA (and most other Euro airlines) turn Economy class into Business by using the same seats, but not selling the middle one in each triplet. All the other differentiation is in the onboard service, the lounge access before boarding, the priority boarding, the extra baggage allowance, stuff like that. This is obviously unworkable on the railway, where the key differentiation for long-distance first class is the fact that you're getting a (hopefully) better seat.

On longer-distance flights the seats for each class are different and, like on trains, they don't vary the numbers. What they can do, however, is use the fact that they know everybody on board (thanks to compulsory reservations) to pick out customers to give complimentary upgrades.
