Mileage Competition 2015

This is really interesting. I'm planning to keep track of all of my railway mileage this year as I'm hoping to visit some new places further afield from Merseyside and Lancashire. I've got friends in South Yorkshire so I'm hoping to visit them a few times during the year and also explore the railway network in the area. Does anybody have any recommendations for any lines in South Yorkshire that are worth travelling on?

So far I've done 232 miles this year (started at the end of January). My target for this year is 2,500 miles and then hopefully more in 2016

How you got via Stoke on a Stoke to Euston Journey I don't know...

From last year's spreadsheet:

- Avoiding Stone and Stafford (i.e. most VT services) = 145m71c
- Via Stone and Stafford (i.e. most LM services) = 149m58c

Can't help you with the others I'm afraid - I'm in the same situation as you. Occasionally RTT has the mileages in, might be worth checking there.

I meant Stafford.

I see someone has given you the mileage both ways anyway. Virgin normally avoid Stafford but you will need to look up the service details to be sure.

Lowestoft - Ipswich is 48m 75c
Liverpool St - Norwich is 115m 20c

Taking the official source and using the standard m/ch conversion (x49.71).

In the absence of RMME I've resorted to using milepost data from the Network Rail Sectional Appendix and a track atlas. On the one hand I've found this pretty interesting, but does present a challenge when trying to work out mileages of a journey. Mileposts can suddenly revert back to 0 (or something completely different). The fact miles and chains aren't decimal adds to the difficulties! So to help me work with this data I put together a spreadsheet. I'm sure there is an easier way to work this stuff out, but it does work.

Anyway, as there seem to be plenty of others in my situation asking for mileages here I thought it would be useful if I shared the spreadsheet to allow others to work with this data (if they so desire). I've included some very basic instructions and an example of how it works in practice.

Comments and suggestions (particularly if you spot a glaring error in the formulae) are welcome.

Thanfully RealTimeTrains has the milages for the trains I used and from that I could work out a blank

1457 1/4 for me so far this year. Only slight issue is that over 600 of those miles were split across 3 voyagers

After a February which turned out to be my best month for mileage ever (1371m 3ch, beating my previous record by about 4 1/2 miles) my yearly mileage has increased to at least 2304. (I say at least because some of the Brussels Metro Mileages are very big under approximations)

Just added up my February Mileage, a bumper 3047, largely down to having the time to take 2 Great Escapes, a Northern £10 rover, a couple of daytrips into Kent and a family trip to Liverpool.

I expect next month to drop very dramatically due to a severe lack of time for trips out.

Can someone help me? My spreadsheet for calculating my rail miles seems to have broken, I used a template from the OP and made some changes to make it more suitable for me. I have attached it to this post, the problem is with the chains calculation. If anyone could help me fix this ASAP it would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that you are using Excel. If you are using the OpenOffice package, it should be a similar process.

Right-click the cell, choose "Format Cells...", click on the "Number" tab, select "General", click on "OK".

Once done that, double-click the cell and press Enter again (ie. re-enter the formula). It should work now.

The problem is that you managed to somehow change the format of the cell to "Text", and that would show anything you entered as plain text rather than treating it as formula as appropriate.
