I'm going to have a go at this this year, reckon I'm on about 1500 already but I can't work the precise mileages out because RMME is down

Do you at least have notes of your journeys? I would at least start with either a notebook or memo file on your phone (whichever's easier/more socially acceptable for you) and note the motive power, starting station and finishing station as a minimum. Noting service details, delays, arrival times etc can be got on with when you're ready and got the basics under control!

I just found it too much data when I started documenting delays etc. as well - nowadays I will simply note the unit, where I boarded and when, then the train's destination. I used to note down when I arrived as well, in order to calculate delays from the underground timetable but again, it just became too much work.

I have posted this before but attached is a sample of what and how I record stuff. The original is a spreadsheet, turned into a PDF to avoid formatting issues for posting; although the example is foreign, the distances are in decimal miles converted from the original kms.

I do like 33056's table, it doesn't go into massive detail which is not a bad thing, especially if you're new to the scene of bashing. Once you've got settled into it, then you can faff around adding more detail should you desire.

Just make sure you transfer stuff to the spreadsheet before you have too much to do, then it'll become a gargantuan task and you won't want to do it

Plenty of us here who can help with mileages! Of course, I will look up journeys on RailMiles for you, in return I only request a Costa coffee

I make use of Google Keep on my phone, allows me to access the notes made via the laptop for transfer to my spreadsheet (lists: From - To - TOC - Miles - Chains - Unit 1 - Unit 2 - Unit 3 - Notes).

With winning units highlighted in red.

So I've made a start in creating the spreadsheet! It was a bit difficult trying to find the full details of services from 2 January, but I managed it. Most of the mileages need to be filled in right now though. Already found missing numbers for pair and a missing one unit out of a pair Both 7 January and I don't think any info on those remains over 2 weeks later?

I've finished compiling the list still missing loads of mileages though, although reached 382 with the 23/57 that I have information for!

Glad you've made the spreadsheet, hope you'll keep it going! Surprising isn't it how gaps in the records can come up, I've got way too many of those to count over the years lol

Flying up to 692 after a day out in London today.

There's a rogue at the top of the leader board with 999999!

I've still got a few values missing (the bulk of which is from Euston to Birmingham New Street not via Northampton and return ). But even without these, I've reached 1272mi 48ch!

Right, I've now received the remaining values (thanks Techniquest ) and the total is:

1556 miles, 47 chains.

Far higher than I'd imagined I'd get . This includes a South Pennines Day Ranger (out from London using ECML, return using MML) as well as two Network Daytrippers (out using WCML avoiding Northampton 2 times, one outward via Northampton, with one return via Chiltern).

Next month will be lower probably :P.

Those spreadsheets in the OP look rather advanced for me! But thanks to a new phone I'm now able to record my journeys directly into a spreadsheet using by phone and Google drive. Only managed a couple of journeys so far but I've found it's much more convenient to just put the details straight in!

Starting at Ilkley, then Leeds-Man Vic via different route in each direction. plus a return to Bolton for a winner 150, (last of the Northern batch).

I've had an amazingly good week last week, adding an absolute ton of mileage to my 2015 total. Over 1,531 in one week is not bad at all in my book, and that's not all of it yet either. I have a ton of moves from the Tyne and Wear Metro last week to get figures added in for, plus two mainline moves:

Marton to James Cook
James Cook to Gypsy Lane

Once all those go in then my figure will rise nicely, but for now I need a break from RailMiles and data crunching! I'm very pleased to be, at this moment in time at least, in 5th place on this year's table. It won't last long at all unfortunately, at least I got into the Top 5 at all this year!

EDIT: Oh yeah, my total is 1,700 at the moment, and the best bit is that it only cost me £149.50 for last week's mileage! Well, that's in terms of fares only, the grand total for every single thing was £354.54!

From last year's spreadsheet:

- Avoiding Stone and Stafford (i.e. most VT services) = 145m71c
- Via Stone and Stafford (i.e. most LM services) = 149m58c

Can't help you with the others I'm afraid - I'm in the same situation as you. Occasionally RTT has the mileages in, might be worth checking there.
