I managed to do the West Curve of Byfleet Junction and the New Guildford Line between Surbiton & Effingham so I've nearly completed the current SWT area (missing West curve of Feltham Junction, Shepperton Branch, Lymington Branch & Island Line)

504 miles covered this weekend (including 167 miles on a 166 (Reading to Worcester both ways )

Agreed, although to be fair you can do quite well in London still, as was proven by my last trip down there, Red Pen Fest, not too long ago. Generally speaking though, yes it's a right pain in the rear on Sundays for sure. Getting to/from Birmingham is far easier than it used to be mind.

In two months for me (13/01-12/02 and 24/02-28/03)...
14p per mile.
1.8 seconds delay per mile.
5000+ miles done on 375s.

Pretty disappointed that I won't commute again really until September. I'll rack up another 1,000 or so in the next month at least, and then probably another 6,000 between September and the end of the year. Given a fair few odd long trips, I'd predict 15,000 for the year for me. I'm pretty impressed with that and surprised.

Yes it is, and I'm jealous because I won't even get to see that tour, despite living within 14 or so miles of the nearest place it runs through

As long as it was for leisure or commuting purposes and it was a journey made by something that runs on rails (and you can find mileage data) it counts

I didn't have to wait an hour at Tamworth, the previous train was about 30L.

I can beat that, on day 14 of my 14 day ALR in 2012 I did Widnes-Warrington Central-Warrington Bank Quay-Glasgow Central-Pollokshields West (or something like that, not got my atlas to hand)-Glasgow Central-Warrington Bank Quay-Birmingham New Street (via Bescot)-Hereford just so I could get a short (less than 2 miles) non-passenger line covered on diversions that weekend!

Kite159: Salisbury to Salisbury via Newport, Port Talbot Parkway, Court Sarn Junction, the Swansea District Line, the Heart of Wales, Abbey Foregate Curve, Wolverhampton and Cheltenham Spa is a lot more than a couple of hundred miles! Bristol to Cardiff is about 38 miles alone, and you're looking at around 89 miles New Street to Temple Meads, so when you add the rest as well you're probably looking nearer 350 miles all in. I haven't got my RailMiles account active at the moment otherwise I'd give you a more accurate figure.

Correct, generally speaking the xx42 services from New Street to Bristol will use the Camp Hill line, and the xx00 from Bristol to Manchester will use it in the other direction. Not always the case, but it is normally the way it's done.

I doubt I'm even close to clearing my target of 1,000 miles per month by the end of the year. Not quite sure how I'm going to hit 12,000 yet, as I doubt I'm on even 4,000 yet but I have intentions to send my figures flying later this year I'll be happy if I hit even 7,500 this year, I don't bother trying for a top 10 finish or whatever in this any more, I know full well a lot of people have better chances of that than me!

I highly doubt I'll stay in the top 10 for much longer, even though I'll clock up a good 600 miles or so in the next 10 days. As a newcomer to the Mileage competition I'm amazed at what I've done already, and I feel somewhat like a cheat as most of mine is commuting anyway!

I've just done my big update and as this is a bit of a special one, had a look where I was when I cleared 10,000 miles!!!

Turns out, which is pretty special actually, it was somewhere around Muir of Ord on the Inverness - Wick train on 24/04/14

I wasn't aware of the significance of a 'top 10' finish if I'm honest. My mileage almost entirely stems from having a lot of days out.

The biggest trips in this update were:

A 4 day Holiday in Scotland to go and do Wick came up about 1200 miles.

A trip to London and a loop down to the south coast and back up which was about 600.

An East Yorks Round Robin and to and from at just under 400 miles.

Two free Northern tickets which yielded just over 400 each.

Lots of smaller bits and bobs too.

Not that it makes any difference (I've just fudged it) but I've also gained my first 'missing mileages' in Oldham / Rochdale Town Centres.
