I agree, buying a ticket and travelling on a pres line is giving money to the preservation movement and keeping locos that you enjoy going to travel behind in action, therefore it should count. I do a lot of preserved miles each year behind 37's because they are no longer available on the mainline as much as they used to be a few years back when you could go and spend the weekend in the Valleys on the Rhymney turns. I count pres mileage but not underground and other piffle like that, i can't understand how you can mileage them anyway, they don't have unit numbers so you would have to make note of viechle numbers and then can you count them as you can;t walk through to scratch each one in etc etc....
You can easily work pres mileage out. There is a brilliant site site called Preserved Diesels. If you go to http://www.preserved-diesels.co.uk/railways/index.htm then click on what ever railway you want the mileage for and there is a 'Mileage Details' link which will give you the mileage between each shack. Either that or buy a copy of that book that lists them all as well.
I don't understand how that is making it fair because a lot if us have the '4 Rails, Little Trains, No Need' attitude towards underground piffle whereas you count it for mileage but not pres that other people do so it balances it out really.
I think that you should be able to count whatever you do for mileage really and not be told you can't include pres mileage because others don't know/can't be bothered to work it out.
