I think it is nonsense but you read the Guardian or BBC or Twitter and that certainly is the narrative that is pushed. The seemingly soft demand for long haul coach travel (on the back of greatly reduce domestic flying) just proves to me that actually trains aren’t all that bad.

The overnight services usually are busier than the day time services. I prefer the train during day as the coach takes too long. The coach is useful overnight as it gets you into London early.
Flixbus do sell out often on the Anglo - Scottish services.

I did see a Citylink livered Yutong for sale on the internet.
That is ex HH Coaches, they are also selling more of their diesel coaches.

Surprised there’s been no news coverage of the end of Megabus (at least that I’ve seen). It looks like the final services run tonight.
Does anyone happen to know when they started operating Glasgow - London services? Around 20 years ago I guess?

I'd say long before under the Stagecoach Express banner, maybe the 80's/90's? Think Citylink ran England-Scotland Cross Border services as well!

50507 and E26 MCL are out on the M11 as well, don't know about the other run though

Was thinking specifically under the Megabus brand, was it a direct replacement for a Stagecoach Express branded service? But with anew brand and, of course, the ‘from £1’ fare structure.

No, it was a completely new service. I seem to recall the very first Megabus service was Oxford to London using old double decker buses - ex Hong Kong Dennis Dragons I think?
Leyland Olympians from the Citybus fleet when Brian Souter exercised his right to buy a load of buses from them, the ex Kenyan Condors/Dragons went to the Magic Bus operation in Manchester IIRC. Interesting that Oxford-London was the first Megabus route though considering Stagecoach were already running the Oxford Tube by that point.

Not quite. The "Stagecoach Express" branding didn't appear until the 90s and was used for interurban services. Bluebird's 305 (now 35) route used it, as did a few routes from Fife to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I'm sure it was used elsewhere, but I don't recall.
Stagecoach's original long-distance express services were simply branded as "Stagecoach" and were sold off to National Express in 1989, with coaches carrying a modified National Express livery and "Caledonian Express Stagecoach" branding (the Stagecoach name was licenced to National Express for two years).
Cross-border services were traditionally operated by a few Scottish Bus Group companies, initially under their own branding, then under the blue/white "SCOTTISH" brand before being brought under the Citylink banner. Stagecoach was originally set up to compete with these services and numerous other operators have had a go over the years. This is definitely a subject for a separate thread, though.
Megabus was an entirely new concept that began in 2003.
It was originally fairly low frequency and ultimately replaced by a number of seats on each Oxford Tube.

NX serves a different market, they have more options with luggage and ticketing, while Flixbus has a massive European network of services that have established a strong well-known brand.

Does anyone know were are the current decker's which are used on the London routes are going to end up? Will they be kept to upgrade all other Scottish citylink routes. Could they be shipped off to Fife or Aberdeenshire for thier express work?
Pretty much all of the Stagecoach Empire used the name, When Stagecoach took over Western Scottish the Ayrshire services were given that tag line, All of the Fife services were the same, United countries services were rebranded to Stagecoach express from Coachlinks. Ribble had good amount of coaches service in the late 90s, so did Devon and Humber area.
It's a shame the name has died out now but the only place left with that type of coach routes are in Scotland it seems.

Probably kept at Cumbernauld that's where all the Megabus Volvo 9700DDs are currently allocated to. I wonder if they might go to Ayr for the X77, needed for the summer months

They always made the odd appearance on Citylink work out of Cumbernauld anyway, 909 mostly but the 900 on the occasion as well so it’s not a rarity

I was just thinking out loud the other day having used Megabus to purchase a seat on Citylink from Glasgow to Inverness... (and stupidly paid £2 to reserve a seat which was occupied when I boarded.)
What is Megabus actually for these days?
Is it just a way for Citylink to offer discount prices without "cheapening" their brand (inadvertently complicating the ticket buying experience)?
It does allow them to get rid of Megabus pricing should a competitor leave a route...

Purchased ticket from Glasgow to Edinburgh airport, was a little cheaper if you know what bus you will catch. I have heard driver will let you on earlier on later buses on these megabus tickets.
That's their (and Citylink) official policy now; your ticket guarantees you a seat on the bus you booked, or standby on any other service, on the same day, in the same direction.
I got the earlier AIR service , rather than a 900 that called at the airport.
I think that is probably permitted.
For example, if someone booked the M10 from Perth to Inverness, I think passengers would be permitteed to use the M90 which covers the same route.
