Just claim exemption if challenged.

nothing they can do

Exemption means nothing when you are getting screamed at on the bus by someone for not wearing one, which I had seen happen several times.

I'm currently waiting with baited breath to see if my employer will impose masks in the office and make life utterly miserable.

I’d rather be in the UK with a population who are apparently “inherently selfish” but by definition apparently capable of applying their own thought to a given situation. History contains numerous examples of countries where this hasn’t happened, including in Europe.

Explain how England voted for Brexit in sufficient majority to drag the whole UK out then?

I'd just ignore the screaming person. If they don't get a response surely they will either get bored or tire themselves out.

No - you tell your employer you are exempt

Most of the studies I've seen seem to indicate about a 10% effectiveness (or that order of magnitude, anyway).

To me that doesn't seem to justify a policy which is inherently divisive and has such a huge visual impact on our daily lives.

Of course, my personal view is that masks are much more about psychology than epidemiology - they make us feel like we're in a pandemic and so may indirectly change behaviour. If the government want us to be worried about this latest variant then making us see masks everywhere will certainly do that, if only subconsciously.
I'd say the psychology is dead at this point. The masks in Scotland aren't modifying behaviour at all. They're just a mildly irritating nuisance of daily life to most people, and most people who find them more than that are not wearing them. Obviously it would be somewhat more convenient, and (across all health risks) probably a little safer for everybody if they were gone, but neither the presence or absence of them is generating much of a response from anybody.

Has Boris said which day the mask rules come into force? Every article I have seen says 'from next week' but doesn't specify the specific day.
Not that I have noticed. But if they are so wonderful, why not make a strong request that they be worn immediately, without waiting for legislation. Analogies are always awkward, but wearing seat belts in cars was strongly advised long before it became mandatory.

England and Wales.

And even then it wouldn't have got over the line if nearly 40% of those who voted in Scotland and 45% of those who voted in NI had not voted to leave.

Not sure what is disturbing you so much, but I shan't apologise. Mask-wearing is not the end of society as we know it and your selective quoting sadly fails to show that I am indeed against actual infringements on rights (lockdowns, families being kept apart, enforced quarantine), which mask-wearing is not, regardless of how much people here seem to think it is.

I'm sorry, we still don't know what superior culture it is that you claim to be pronouncing to us all from.

As a selfish Brit, I can't really take your opinions seriously until I know to whom I should be deferring.

This thread is proving my comments to b very accurate, actually.

Back up your statements that the UK is a selfish country and I may take you seriously…..I’ll be waiting (probably indefinitely
Living with covid is not letting it run riot, that is a recipe for a new lockdown.

Yawn yawn yawn, been hearing this old Chestnut for two years now and it’s gotten old, it’s not 2020 anymore we have the vaccines and they were supposed to give us back our lives, and we’re facing masks again? How about the selfish locktavists who insist on restrictions over a virus with a 99% survival rate, we have to live with at some point and time starts now.

Well I would guess from username Berliner that the poster is from somewhere in central Europe.

TBF there are many nations in central Europe that are unselfish. At least, I cannot recall anyone from Central Europe implying that other nations are inferior.

I agree, but since labour have been consistently Pro restriction, doesn't it seems the wrong message ?
Thats why it is the size of the byelection vote that the Reform Party gets that matters.

A big turn out for them will unsettle tory backbenchers who will fear that come the next election, Reform will split their vote and loae them their seat. It was their predecessor the Brexit Party reducing the tories to 9% in the 2019 Euro elections that made the backbenchers act to defenestrate May.

You could just trawl through the thousands of pages of people on here boasting about not adhering to covid rules?

Don't take me seriously then, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I am perfectly entitled to say that this is a selfish country based on my own observations, if you don't think so then I'm happy for you.

There’s something of a ‘well cloth masks don’t do much to protect me so I won’t wear them’ vibe in this thread - if everyone around you was wearing one it would substantially reduce the risk of you contracting covid.
The results of randomised control trials have consistently found the effect to be negligible...

Where is the evidence that any of these rules have made a significant difference, perhaps you could substantiate the 'scotch egg rule'?

In all seriousness, branding an entire people as selfish is a little worrying

Ah, i see that might happen, rather than a swing to labour. Won't do much for centrist conservatism though !

It will be the end of society if we keep dumping them in the oceans, rivers and other environments where their polluting effects impact the ecosystems we depend on for survival and a good quality of life.

Then look no further than those in Parliament who take their mask off to speak, why are they not keeping it on? Surely speaking is expelling more air and by definition more of whatever pathogens one might be infected with? Maybe it's because people can't understand someone properly when they speak with a mask on. In today's Downing Street briefing none of Johnson, Whitty and Vallance were wearing masks either, talk about not practising what they preach, but maybe again it's because they subconsciously know that wearing a mask impairs communication.

Well, as a citizen of a "selfish country" I would have thought that you would be prepared to give an example of a non-selfish country that you identify with so that we might learn. However it seems that that has not been forthcoming.

In terms of posts, we have a lot of forum members not prepared to put up with half baked, I'll thought out measures with no provenance.

Though how you claim to extrapolate the opinions of this forum to the whole nation is something I'm also fascinated by.

That aside, I don't accept that other countries care or know less about disabled people or abuse victims to make mask exemptions.
I must say I very much disagree in regards to the bit about disabled people/abuse victims. It is very important to note that this should be an inclusive country. And I wouldn't want to victimise these people who are unable to wear one as you seem to be doing.

If you don't want to wear a mask then just spend the whole bus/train journey eating a bag of crisps, that's what everyone seemed to do last time!

I'm sorry it worries you but I did say "Generally speaking" and not "Every single British citizen"...

Where is the evidence that any of these rules have made a significant difference, perhaps you could substantiate the 'scotch egg rule'?

In a situation where "we are all this together" there were clearly people who had no intention of being part of the collective and decided to ignroe the rules. I am not debating the effectiveness of the rules, I am pointing out that many people broke them or will break, and boasted about it.

I didn't, but, ok.

Ok, you disagree, that's fine, but please point out where I victimise anyone? Is saying there should be no exemptions any worse than those who proudly boast about falsely wearing the lanyard that truly exempt people are meant to have as their own?

Your last part is far from the truth. Japanese will often mask up if they are unwell to ensure they don’t pass on whatever they have.

That’s exactly the point; they could show courtesy to others far more effectively by staying at home!

This is how you end up with actual dictatorships, not the one you all think you're living in, but go ahead, vote for some lunatic anti-mask party and then see what else they bring in through the back door, you'll be responsible for the outcome, so I hope you hold your hands up and admit it if the worst should happen.

That aside, I don't accept that other countries care or know less about disabled people or abuse victims to make mask exemptions. Rather that they are more likely to follow a collective mindset and just wear one as it's all part of the greater good, or it is if you believe masks do anything, many countries populations do, or at the very least they don't get all in a tizzy about wearing one in places where they are asked to. The UK is inherently selfish. The best evidence is right here on this thread where many of you boast about flaunting the rules as you have decided you don't agree or scream about rushing to buy a lanyard which, as a direct result of those kinds of actions, has reduced its meaning to nothing. Yes, the mask might do nothing, but why are YOU (collective You) so special that you decide to ignore the rules everyone has been asked to follow? You aren't going to bring about the revolution by not wearing your mask, all you're going to do is increase the odds of bringing hassle to yourself and do someone else out of a lanyard (one of those people who you all claim this country looks out for more than others by allowing them an exemption). I would support mass flaunting of lockdown rules as that really is an infringement of human rights, but masks? I couldn't care less. Way bigger things to worry about.

Are you really so incapable of putting two and two together? (My bold).

Living with covid is not letting it run riot, that is a recipe for a new lockdown.

How exactly is it running riot? You do realise it’s an endemic virus at this point don’t you? It’s going to infect people in large numbers for the foreseeable future and most likely beyond. This “control the virus” narrative is complete fantasy, people need to accept this and move on.

Indeed. If they made a significant difference I would happily wear one even if it wasn't ma datory, but they don't.

They are basically an example of the worst sort of politician imposing something visible but useless so they can be seen to be doing something and so that the fearful have a placebo.

And they are supported by those of a puritannical nature (who seem to disproportonately infest the Labour Party) who are never happier than when they are imposing regulations on people for what they deem the greater good.
