Whilst a few hundred yards of re-aligned track are being laid, wouldn't it make sense to install electrification bases at the same time on this new stretch. It would certainly make it much easier to extend the wires in the future.
This one pops up quite often when new lines are being laid, but the answer is probably that involving another set of contractors just means they get in each others' way and probably extend the duration of the work. It's easy enough to install bases during planned engineering hours on a day when nothing else is working on that bit of line. And I doubt they would wish to bring down the wrath of Grayling by doing any work on something he has cancelled.

The North end of the carpark has been completely tarmaced and the South end is having some large - and very large! drainage(?) pipes buried. There is no clearance work happening on the west side yet.DSCF7445.JPG DSCF7446.JPG DSCF7447.JPG

Some of the large drainage pipes have been buried and more of the South end of the car park is being leveled ready for surfacing. There is no visible work yet on the West side of the MML.DSCF7449.JPG
The tamping machine was still in the station spur.

Thanks whhistle.
I spotted more activity today - the approach road is having piles driven into the embankment (along its whole length from the number of piles awaiting driving).DSCF7454.JPG The two car tamper unit is just behind the piles. On the south end of the car park the edging slabs are being installed alongside the track and the area is being levelled.

In the car park?
:s
As many people will remember, Market Harborough is now a shadow of its former self. It was a junction for five routes with its own engine shed and goods yard. There were, I believe, four platforms - so I'm sure provided many happy hours of railway spotting pleasure.
......and after the car park we will get the new track laying and platform moving......:D

After the snow they have been able to get more done in the car park.DSCF7473.JPG
In the other direction is the removed second short siding, the Tamping machine, and the pile driving JCB.DSCF7474.JPG

I think that work has now stopped for Christmas holidays - but I bet many of those employed here will be on various NR projects over the next few days?

Lots of activity on the South end of the car park. They are nearly finished laying sand for the waterproof membrane sheeting and on top of the sheeting is the hardcore for the tarmac. At the North end a layer of tarmac has been put down. DSCF7498.JPG

DSCF7520.JPG DSCF7521.JPG DSCF7523.JPG As Carillion has gone into liquidation it is not really surprising that there is no work happening on the new car park.....
However two holes have appeared in the existing West side car park and the excavator was working with two men on the derelict west side area.

Workers are back on the car park and have spread some more stone. It has been agreed that they are going to finish the car park over the next couple of months.
It remains to be seen if they, or some other contractor(s), will be doing the new platforms and track straightening.

DSCF7526.JPG Work continues on the new car park, about 6 men are putting more drainage pipes in the South East corner to connect with work being done on the access road. The holes in the existing car park on the West side of the line are for new valves in the Severn Trent water mains.

The North end of the car park now has lamp posts and the South end has nearly all of the foundation stonework laid ready for tarmac. By the line to the North of the station are lengths of rail ready for the new track formation and on the Great Bowden embankment there were some (surveying teams?) workers. The car park drainage pipes are laid down underground to the river by the road bridge.DSCF7538.JPG DSCF7545.JPG

Wow this is going much faster than I expected!

Can anyone remember the linespeed NR is aiming for when the project is finished and the current one?

As of today lunchtime the surfacing of the car park was in progress with all edging and lighting apparently in place except around the GSM-R (or public mobile?) mast and equipment room which according to the artists impressions remains in a fenced compound within the car park in the initial phase at least.

As Edwin says, virtually all of the car park has had a layer of tarmac now - but I think it will still be having a top surface layer all over. There are several piles of "stuff" at the North end and an access route is being created to the East side (Southbound) platform with a temporary shelter being made. The access road is still rough stone though, so I expect it won't be open until March. DSCF7589.JPG

Thanks Martinr1, that shows the "S" bend very clearly! They have done more on getting access to Platform 1 from the new car park.

Press release:

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds...-upgrade-to-railway-in-leicestershire-begins/

The first piece of work to upgrade the track at Market Harborough takes place this weekend as part of a major project to increase the line speed through the station.

The Market Harborough Line Speed Improvement Programme is a key part of a wider upgrade to the Midland Main Line, which runs from St Pancras to Sheffield and the work taking place at the station will see new track and ballast installed, as well as work to the signalling.

It’s the first part of work to straighten the track which, once completed in December 2019 will allow trains to travel through the area at higher speeds resulting in a reduced journey time which will improve connectivity across the region and help to drive economic growth.

Due to the nature of the work, no trains will call at Market Harborough station on the following dates:

  • Sunday, 4 March
  • Sunday, 11 March
  • Sunday, 18 March
  • Sunday, 25 March
Instead, bus replacement services will be in operation and those wishing to travel are advised to check before they travel, either with East Midlands Trains or via National Rail Enquiries.

The track improvement is the latest stage of the project carried out by Network Rail in partnership with East Midlands Trains. Work has already taken place to improve the station for customers, including developing a new access road to reduce congestion into the station and building a new car park. Further upcoming work includes improving access at the station by installing a new footbridge with lifts, and extending platforms, which will reduce the stepping distance onto trains.

Rob McIntosh, Route Managing Director at Network Rail, said: “We’re delighted to have moved onto the next phase of this major upgrade, which will see the track straightened. This work will mean trains can travel at faster speeds along this section, resulting in a reduced journey time for passengers and we hope the improvements will help to drive economic growth in the East Midlands.

“To allow the work to be carried out safely, no trains will be able to run on the line and bus replacement services are in operation. We know this can impact on passengers and we’ve worked closely with East Midlands Trains to keep disruption to a minimum. We thank passengers for their patience whilst this upgrade takes place.”

Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said: “Along with Network Rail, we are working hard to deliver these unprecedented improvements on our route to London. The work taking place at Market Harborough is a crucial part of the long term plan for change on the Midland Main Line Upgrade which will provide better journeys for the growing number of people using the railway. People who have been travelling through the station will have already seen work taking place on the new car park which is expected to open in early Spring and this next phase of work will see the start of major work on the infrastructure.

“Inevitably, there is some short term pain whilst this improvement work is carried out, and along with Network Rail, we have tried to limit the disruption as much as we can. However, it does mean that trains will be replaced by buses from Market Harborough on Sundays during March and we’d advise customers to check their journeys before travelling.”

I don't know what the specific work is.

I noticed the car park barriers were up today, so decided to drive up, hoping to see Team Orange hard at work, making the most of the weekend closure.

Of course there was absolutely nobody there and nothing to see...

Can only assume the work is not directly at the station, or that a waterlogged pitch stopped play (very rapid warming and thaw in the last 18 hours)

There is still work going on in the new car park - I am however, surprised to see how much effort is going into the edging alongside the line - given that the car park will be extended to meet the new alignment in the future. There are now four excavator/bulldozer/vehicles and temporary lights in place on the Western rough ground so work there should start soon.

The car park entrance road is nearly ready for tarmac and there are more construction vehicles on the West side rough ground, but no work yet.
