Manchester CTLZ

Hi, just wanted to check what railway stations the Manchester CTLZ ticket is valid to.

I bought a Stockport to Manchester CTLZ, would it allow me to get off at, say, Oxford Road, Deansgate or Victoria, then use the tram? I've got the more expensive "any permitted route" and not "avanti only" ticket since I would need to use a Northern service.

Yes, that's exactly the purpose of a CTLZ ticket, it allows tram travel in the central zone (now Metrolink zone 1) from anywhere in the Manchester stations group (Victoria, Deansgate, Ox Rd, Piccadilly). Bear in mind though that there are no tram connections from Oxford Road!

However, if you need to travel outside Metrolink Zone 1 you will have to buy an additional ticket.

I've no doubt there will be some debate over the technicality and minutiae of what internal NRE or the routing guide or whatever says, however in real life as long as your ticket isn't operator restricted (ie you have the any permitted and not avanti only) then you will have no problem using a Manchester CTLZ ticket to or from any of the Manchester Stations (clearly if say you were catching a connection at Piccadilly, for instance, and you'd come in from Bolton there would be no requirement to alight at Deansgate as the first Manchester Station you arrive at then walk the rest of the way to Picc) and yes, you can use the tram, but only within the city zone/zone 1/whatever it's called this week.

Manchester CTLZ tickets allow travel to either Victoria, Deansgate, Oxford Rd or Piccadilly

And free tram travel between the following stops:
Deansgate-Castlefield, St Peters Square, Exchange Square, Victoria, Shudehill, Market Street, Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly

Just to add also, as you have purchased an any route permitted you are allowed to change at Piccadilly for example if you were intending to travel to Deansgate or Oxford Road from Stockport if you are not on a direct train

It shouldn't - but it probably will unfortunately. It's best to ask staff to let you through.

Yep, hence me having to “split ticket” from my local station to Stockport. Still cheaper than getting a Manchester Stations ticket then Tram travelcard, though.

Indeed! I always forget about New Islington and Cornbrook was interestingly only added to what is now the former ‘city zone’ a few years ago when the zones became numerical (which makes a lot of sense as it’s frequently used as a terminus for when things go dramatically wrong with the network along with Castlefield)

Are you aware that you can buy single/return ticket from booking offices directly to Metrolink Zone 1 with train to tram ticketing system of outside of GM?

I can’t say if it will be cheaper or not however!

No, I didn’t know that! But, the ticket office will be closed before I get to the station.

If you ever require it again from outside of Manchester, the person selling you the ticket (guard or office) can simply sell a ticket from XXX to ‘GM Metrolink zone 1’ (or additional zones as required).

It’s not well known but it’s something I’ve recently been taught to sell with TPE that comes in particularly handy for leisure travellers with the new Trafford Centre Line!

Which gateline? I've heard Oxford Road and Victoria will swallow them but Piccadilly won't (don't quote me on that)

Fairly sure I stuck one through the Victoria barriers not too long ago, and it was returned.

I have found something interesting on Trainline. When you do a Cheadle Hulme - Manchester CTLZ CIA Deansgate, it advises you to go to Piccadilly, change for a tran to Deansgate then double back to Piccadilly. Just a weird bug I wanted to share.

Buy a ticket to Salford central..allows tram to Vic from Pic!

You can still purchase as the railcard discount will be given on the 'rail" portion

Just a random thing on TPE..it doesn't show the Transport for Wales only fares for Crewe and other stations to Manchester.. Annoying as I use their app as it gives Nectar points!
