Thanks! It has had a fairly strong crop to about half the original neg size to overcome the limitation I had of just having a 50mm 'standard' lens to work with, so in effect becomes a short telephoto view.

Vary much looks like Ardlui, difficult to place that background anywhere else.

Great, thanks for the confirmation. I had to check on the map to even see where it was, but the satellite view even nearly 40 years later still has the same siding and square building behind.
Glad you like the photos, I have around 60 more to still to post, just need to sort into vaguely coherent themes.

I think I can broadly call this grouping, the South West.

50004, on the right of the picture above, was in charge of the exhibition train celebrating the GWR 150th anniversary.

02/08/85. Also part of the GWR 150 celebrations, 47500 'Great Western' was one of 4 locos repainted in GWR green. Seen here at Exeter St. Davids heading the 09.23 Newcastle - Penzance.

My teenage self remembers seeing that stock; I also recall taking the BT liveried 118 from Exmouth to Exeter (my parents were very obliging: they deposited my brother and I on St David's platforms, whilst they went shopping!)

22/12/86. A bit of a con-flab going on at Salisbury outside 33057, which had recently arrived on the 14.10 from Waterloo. The light was getting a bit marginal, but that never seemed to stop me. 33004 & 33022 can be seen leaving light engine.

02/08/85. If you have to wait on a platform for a train, Starcross in the early evening at the end of a balmy summers day is a very good choice. All the better if one of the few loco hauled trains is going to stop for you. in this case it is 33016 on the 17.25 Exeter - Paignton.

With Leicester being my home town station, I have obviously got heaps of photos taken there. I'll have to insert another selection now otherwise we will never get through them...
12/03/85. 45118 pulls into platform 3 with a morning London service. The chap on the right had arrived early, as the 07.45 to Leeds - the next service from Platform 2 was more than 1/2 hour away. Time for the Railbar and a nice cup of Travellers Fare perhaps..

May '86. Leicester was changing to colour lights around this time and a new power signal box was being completed. These chaps were probably something to do with getting it all plumbed in. 20093 on a ballast train provides the framing.

I used go down to St David’s after school and do the 17:25 to Exeter- Paignton very often, even if it was just to St Thomas as I liked my 33s. It always left from platform 6 and was nearly always an Eastleigh 33/0, although a couple times I found a 31/4 on the front.

I think of all the photos I have posted, if I could go back in time to just one, it would be this one. The combination of loco, carriages, route and weather - it just looks so inviting.

I'm still slightly bemused looking back now on the photographs I took as to how often I tried to incorporate people, whether they be railway employees or just the users of the trains. I genuinely don't recall actively trying to do so, whereas I do remember my motivations on composition and finding alternatives to the front 3/4 view. I wonder if this photo was influential though, it was from my first roll of B&W film. I was not expecting this to be the standout picture, it was only a DMU and I pointed my camera as the light and shadows looked good. I recall being quite taken by it at the time when seeing the result, so maybe it did help inform what followed.

25/10/86. The crew of 47462 have a quick turnaround at Carstairs having only arrived with an Edinburgh portion of a Southbound service 20 minutes before. Safely attached, the crew get ready to depart back to the capital.

There's something timeless about "against the direction of light" (contre jour?) Images, I always find their moodiness captivating.
I have a superb book of London's railways during WW2 and I think every one of my favourite images in it, are lit in this way.

31/10/86. I didn't often carry a tripod, so a combination of wide open aperture and support from anything fairly solid nearby all helped - judging by the camera angle and location, it was probably the wooden cable bobbin seen in a couple of other images posted previously. 1 second exposure on this one. 33051 & 73134 at Waterloo.
