19/10/86. This time taken from South Queensferry. A 47/7 with push-pull stock heads north.

As a 'basher' you always had your favourites, right? I definitely had a soft spot for Cromptons and a real strong hold for them in the mid eighties was on the Wessex line, nominally the Bristol - Portsmouth's. As such, Southampton proved a good base and almost became a second home for extended trips away from the Midlands.
10/08/85. Diagramed for 33/0's with a typical load of 5, Cromptons pounded up and down the line largely on an hourly schedule. 33046 makes the stop at Fareham on the 12.05 Cardiff - Portsmouth Harbour.

I absolutely loved doing the 33s on the Portsmouth - Cardiffs. Being in the front vestibule of a mk1 with the shonky lightbulbs glowing away as you hit the dip in the middle of the Severn Tunnel and the driver opened the loco up to full power. Just brilliant!

22/12/86. 33003 pulls in to Sailsbury with the 14.15 Portsmouth - Bristol. 33004 is stabled in the bay platform.

04/11/86. 33028 on a Portsmouth bound service has to share platform space at Southampton with piles of mail bags.

18/08/85. From memory, these daily schedules required about 8 different locos and by the end of the day you could fairly confidently work out what would appear next. The light was good, so I lined myself up at the end of a Southampton platform to photograph expected 33003 arriving on the 16.15 from Cardiff. However, '003 had had an issue at Sailsbury and in rolls 33201 for what would be my first Slim Jim haulage. I still remember sprinting down that platform, inwardly yelling "yes! come on!"

Oh yes, that captures it perfectly! Cracking, characterful loco's perfectly suited to this type of cross country service.

04/11/85. Absolutely stunning light at Fareham makes this one something of a favourite. 33027 rounds the curve into the station with the 10.10 Portsmouth - Swansea.

10/08/85. A mild variation on route as this is the 15.10 Portsmouth - Western Super Mare, about to leave Southampton. Dramatic skies and a seriously credible combo of Sultan and The Burma Star (33025 & 33056) definitely warrant inclusion. I had the gen and had already taken this from Portsmouth.

Superb composition - and a location I wish I'd had the chance to "do" when the Gosport branch was still open.
Fareham looks strange to me without the third rail!

As a side project, I have been working on this one when I have had a bit of time to spare. This relates back to one of my favourite images I posted back on page 2 of this thread. I had taken a second shot of the same train, but the positioning of another enthusiast behind the two railway men had taken away from the simplicity of the story in the image. I have been gradually honing my Photoshop skills to eradicate said individual and here are the results - the original image is added as thumbnail attachment, if you want to see.
21/06/85. the short mail train headed by 81021 is held at a red signal at Coventry station. After contacting the signal box, the driver and secondman wait out the delay on the platform.

Trying to shape whatever I have left into digestible chunks, I have this little siding we can pause in en route. On the summer Saturday , 5th July '86, I took these 4 photographs all with 26034 in the frame in the late afternoon at Glasgow Queen St.
Firstly, after arrival from Carstairs on the 07.15 Paignton - Inverness. My notes say that some of these summer services were routed via Queen St. Very much now in Railfreight livery, this was probably a chuck out from Eastfield to cover for a shortage of ETH 47's.

I am really enjoying this black and white portrayal on this thread. It really allows comparison with the steam era. And there is so much atmosphere compared to colour some how.

After a 47 takes the train forward, the 26 is released and makes it to the far end of the platform before being stopped by signals. 37401 meanwhile has attached to the stock which had arrived in from Aberdeen.

I've been away for a few days, so I was delighted to see you'd posted some more!
33s have an exotic feel for me, being so far from their operating area. However, when I got into haulage, I found them disappointingly similar to 26s and 27s! But like many things I look back on in reflection, I regret how unappreciative of them I was. I still did plenty 33 turns though, and those Cardiff Portsmouths were a blast back in the day......and I'd never have visited Trowbridge station if it wasn't for Class 33s!
Lovely pics again, and I'm particularly impressed with the 'desperate spotter removal' skills!

05/07/86. This is what riding the West Highland line is all about - wild rugged scenery and snaking tracks hugging the mountain contours. 37411 is in charge of the 16.50 Glasgow QS - Fort William.

More great photos....but that one was taken at Mallaig!
That looks like Ardlui (@Cheshire Scot will know for sure)....in which case the loco has probably failed and is awaiting a tow back to Eastfield!

At the time, my photo note book was back filled after I had developed the images, using my bashing log and other scribbled notes (both long since lost). I guess that I took the Fort William to Mallaig train I keep referencing, but the photos are actually of the return working starting at Mallaig.
