Not sure about this, but in the latter days this service came up from Penzance as a 158 attached to a 153, with the train dividing at Bristol Temple Meads. The units then detached, and the 158 went forwards, avoiding Newport, with the 153 forming a service to Milford Haven.Did Wales and West ever use a 153 on the Penzance to Manchester?![]()

12:27 Great Malvern - Southampton Central in the last timetable was virtually always a single carriage Class 153 unit.
This is 153 miles and 38 chains.
Can anybody beat that?
I've been on a 150 in 2003 going Gloucester to Penzance (I only travelled between Exeter and Plymouth) - 246mile trip
I've been on the 9am-ish service from Shrewsbury to Swansea which was a single 153 - and pleasantly surprised to find it had a trolley service! When we passed the service from Cardiff (at Llanwrtyd?), that train was made up of a 153+150 combo. To slightly correct you, 153s ARE currently used on the Heart of Wales line, usually on the mid-morning services. There is one that originates at Cardiff, and runs to Shrewsbury via Swansea, Llanelli and HoWL, Craven Arms and Church Stretton.
By my very rough calculations, that's 169 miles terminus to terminus.

The 1625 Lincoln to Hull is often a 153, 107 mi 60 ch.
Sure that is booked for a 14x, as it is now the longest run by a Pacer, and one of the only workings where a Pacer gets as far as Hull.
A 153 is a multiple unit, the term multiple refers to it's ability to couple to other multiple units, not the number of vehicles.Aye but that's a multiple unit. 150s used to do Penzance-Cardiff regularly in the Wessex Trains days.
All booked 153s Mondays to Saturdays, but some booked 150s on Sundays. To slightly correct you, 153s ARE currently used on the Heart of Wales line, usually on the mid-morning services. Also spell when combining and splitting was done at NewportNot sure about this, but in the latter days this service came up from Penzance as a 158 attached to a 153, with the train dividing at Bristol Temple Meads. Probably moving a 150 from North to South of ATW territory. Opportunities TO ATTACH via Marches are very limited due to almost every thing worked by 175s.Yep we cover the 09:00 SHR dep and the 09:16 SWA dep regularly - I'm working it Thursday north-south.
Llanwrtyd is indeed the cross-over point. Not sure why you had 150+153 (seems like overkill to me!) although south-north is always busier than north-south at that time of day. I know the route is popular at Royal Welsh Show time and also on weekends when Swansea / Ospreys / Scarlets are playing at home.

How regularly please? - I'm bashing the line on Tuesday, and was thinking I'd need to stock up before I got on the 09:00 SHR departure
No longer running but in the late 90s early 00s Central Trains used to run a service from Skegness to Aberystwyth via that was often substituted for a 153 unit!. Of course the creation of the Welsh franchise put paid to that.
I think they are all 2-car 150s now but the Heart of Wales line was worked by 153s until recently and that is 127 miles Shrewsbury-Swansea.
There were extensions to Cardiff, another 47 miles, at the southern end, and to Crewe or Chester northbound, another 32/52 miles.
I have a timetable from 2005 showing an evening service from Swansea to Bangor via HoW and Crewe - 239 miles - arriving 0046!
Or its Saturday only return working - 2E65 (if I remember correctly) 0726 Pwlheli-Grimsby Town (got there about 1530 or something daft) - all shacks via Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Lincoln! Don't remeber it being within 20 minutes of time all summer at Lincoln!
Booked a dogbox for the first summer season it ran too!
