Longest Run on a Single Unit.

I recall commenting about how inadequate the single unit operating the Crewe-Derby service was but is it the longest one would have to endure a single unit journey for or are there other regularly scheduled runs for a single unit which are longer in time and/or distance ?

I would have thought Newark North Gate to Peterborough via Lincoln is longer than Crewe to Derby.

Isn't there a train that runs early in the morning from Bristol Parkway To Penzance calling all stations.

I think the OP is referring to a unit used comprised of a single carriage such as a 153 or a 121, otherwise they'll be hundreds or thousands of services that are longer than Crewe to Derby and use a DMU, an EMU or a DEMU.

153s have been used on the Heart of Wales line.

Probably not as far as some, but how about the Wessex Trains/FGW Southampton to Gloucester service quite often used a single 153. I don't know if this still the case, think the service runs to Gt.Malvern now and uses a 2 car 158

I think they are all 2-car 150s now but the Heart of Wales line was worked by 153s until recently and that is 127 miles Shrewsbury-Swansea.
There were extensions to Cardiff, another 47 miles, at the southern end, and to Crewe or Chester northbound, another 32/52 miles.
I have a timetable from 2005 showing an evening service from Swansea to Bangor via HoW and Crewe - 239 miles - arriving 0046!

Don't think I can answer the question of how far it is, but the 1227 Southampton Central-Great Malvern can easily be a 153; I've seen it a few times at Southampton Central.

What about the service from Scunthorpe to Lincoln ?
All stops to Doncaster, then all stops to Sheffield & onwards all stops to Lincoln every 2 hrs a through service and return.
That must be a fair run on a 153 , it gets full in parts too.

Think that is booked to be a 156 always, so unless there is a problem with the 156, I think the furthest the 153 can get to is Barrow.

However, I do know there is at least one service between Lancaster and Carlisle where a single 153 works for part of it, but is coupled to another 153 at Barrow.

I recall a trip from hell back from Penzance on a 2 car 158 running that service many moons ago. It was fairly comfortable... until something in the front coach failed causing the lighting in it to drop, leaving only the rear coach in operation for the vast majority of the trip

12:27 Great Malvern - Southampton Central in the last timetable was virtually always a single carriage Class 153 unit.

This is 153 miles and 38 chains.

Can anybody beat that?

Northbound it runs via Bristol but I think the mileage is the same - 155.

Still 153s on Heart of Wales on all Weekday services but frequent 150 substitutions. You are correct with Swansea to Bangor

Was Penzance to Milford Haven. Formed 158 + 153 from Penzance splitting at Newport with 158 going to Manchester. Went out the day before with the 2 portions combining at Newport

153s have been used on the Heart of Wales line.

To slightly correct you, 153s ARE currently used on the Heart of Wales line, usually on the mid-morning services. There is one that originates at Cardiff, and runs to Shrewsbury via Swansea, Llanelli and HoWL, Craven Arms and Church Stretton.

By my very rough calculations, that's 169 miles terminus to terminus.
