Longest diversion by rail compared to road

Retford LL - Lincoln - Newark - Retford HL

Retford low level to Retford high level. You would have to go to Lincoln. Then Newark. Then Peterborough. Then Retford. (or is there a direct train to Peterborough or between Retford and Newark? (don't they usually just atop at one of them?)

On weekdays the 2-hourly York stoppers stop at both Newark & Retford.
I think that the Leeds Services stop at both stations on Saturdays.

Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria is less than 1 mile and takes no more than 15 minutes to walk through the city centre.

By train you would have to go Piccadilly > Stalybridge > Huddersfield > Brighouse > Hebden Bridge > Rochdale > Victoria, which would take a good hour, if not two!

(You could do it much quicker by train using the various freight branches which connect the lines out of Piccadilly and Victoria to the North East of the city centre ie: Guide Bridge/Denton/Ashton Moss – although that would involve a reverse or two…)

i'd say probably yeovil; junc-pen mill has got to be one of the furthest, (prob already mentioned but havent read through the pages.

Also how about Falmouth- Redruth 9 miles by road, train has to go Fal-truro (10 miles) Truro- Redruth (8/9 miles) total about 18-19 miles by train.
Or Falmouth- Newquay, 18 miles by road, 50+miles by train.

Falmouth - Newquay, 18 miles by road, 50+miles by train.

We actually did this journey, starting off from Falmouth Docks station, last week, when we were on holiday in Falmouth. It was worth it for the scenery.(We also did the Falmouth Docks to Looe journey, with the associated changes, on another day).

Not true I'm afraid....
You can go via Salford Crescent taking 20 minutes or so.

Agreed on the Man Picc to Victoria isn't massively difficult
To be a pendant, it could be done by rail quite quick as the Metrolink runs between the two too :P

Another one is Aberystwyth to Carmarthen, thanks to the Beeching axe
By road (station to station) is 47.8 miles taking about 1 hr 20 mins
By train it is around 6 hours and just over 212 rail miles

There was a time when cross country trains between the Midlands and South West were diverted from Bristol to Exeter via Bath, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Honiton when Taunton-Exeter was closed at weekends, although I don't think this has occurred since around 2001/2. Bristol to Exeter by road is approx 1 hour 30mins , 1 hour- 1 hr 10 mins by rail via Taunton, but the diversion via Yeovil took about 3 hours! More recently, when Taunton-Exeter is closed, cross country trains run as far as Taunton, with buses from there to Exeter, which is still an hour quicker than the rail diversion via Yeovil!

Road might be aggrandising it slightly, but there's 15 miles of track from close to Loch Laggan via Loch Ossian to Currour. Doubt you'd get a replacement bus down it, though!
