It was 442410.Do we know the unit number?
People should already know what an electric motor is.![]()
Exactly. You would hardly say that the engine in your hoover has broken would you?![]()
I once road in a buffet car of class 442 when they were operated by South West Trains and there was an alarming burning plastic smell.
Just to be pig awkward and pedantic you also wouldn't say; "The motor in your British Rail Engineering Limited has broken"![]()

You wouldn't say that the motor in your vacuum cleaner has broken then.

Was it the brakes? The HST's (and loco hauled Mk3s as well I think) have a problem where the smell of burning brake disks enters the passenger saloon. It's because the fresh air inlet for the air conditioning is near the brakes. As the class 442's use the same mark 3 coach design, unless the design was altered, it will probably effect it as well.
Ah but mk3 coaches automatically shut the air intake off when the brakes are applied. So if the louvre is working properly ie not seized or a u/s solenoid then this shouldn't happen. (Smell of burning/brake dust)

Did they always have that system ? If so, there were a lot of broken ones on the midland main line in the 1980s.
