I once road in a buffet car of class 442 when they were operated by South West Trains and there was an alarming burning plastic smell.

When we were being taught 442's we were training on a unrefurbised one, complete with buffet car. There was a BR branded Microwave oven (wished I got my mits on that) and instructions on how to make cup a soup. When they came into service none of our keys could open the kitchen :-x

Just to be pig awkward and pedantic you also wouldn't say; "The motor in your British Rail Engineering Limited has broken"<D :p

You wouldn't say that the motor in your vacuum cleaner has broken then.:D

Was it the brakes? The HST's (and loco hauled Mk3s as well I think) have a problem where the smell of burning brake disks enters the passenger saloon. It's because the fresh air inlet for the air conditioning is near the brakes. As the class 442's use the same mark 3 coach design, unless the design was altered, it will probably effect it as well.

Ah but mk3 coaches automatically shut the air intake off when the brakes are applied. So if the louvre is working properly ie not seized or a u/s solenoid then this shouldn't happen. (Smell of burning/brake dust)

I did laugh! Close off the air intake when braking instead of relocating the air intake. What a fudge.

That's when they have new brake blocks fitted

Do they fail often. I've been on at least two HST's where I have smelt it?

On an HST, it is of course always possible that the smell is coming in through open door windows.

Did they always have that system ? If so, there were a lot of broken ones on the midland main line in the 1980s.

The motor in my Hoover broke once. They were better when they refurbed them although it got rid of that distinctive sound

Pretty much all sets can sometimes give off a bit of smell and even visible smoke from their brakes from time to time!
