He can use the oyster or a travelcard, he'll need to go from Kings Cross St Pancras - London Bridge then the Jubilee to North Greenwich :)

Yes, North Greenwich is in Travelcard Zone 3. If he's there for just the day I'd suggest he purchases a Zone 1 - 4 Travelcard (because Off Peak rates are available with a 1 - 4 but not a 1 - 3), or consider purchasing an Oakham Travelcard ticket.

It is, but it's also in zone 2. As long as you travel from the Central London direction and not from the Stratford direction then you only need a zone 1 and 2 travelcard. If he's only making the one return journey then is it possible to buy an Oakham to Underground zone 1 and 2 return? If not the oyster option is £1.80 each way off peak so you'd need £3.60. My hesitation over the oyster option is that (assuming he's off to a show/concert/event) there's a high chance of failing to touch in properly at North Greenwich on the way home.
