Have used the new chiltern 172's and not experienced any problems. Everyone comments how smooth they are and that is despite being used to a decent fleet. Yes it is a different gearbox with more pronounced change but nothing like on that video. Guess we are going to see posts slaying them for every teething trouble.

BBC described the Class 150s as boneshakers. There has never been any shaking off the 150s and they have served the area well. One man says everywhere else has better trains. Look at Manchester with its pacers! The 150s will be given a new lease of life with FGW and Northern, with those great 172s here!

In many peoples' eyes it seems: new is always good, older is always bad. That guy has got a cheek saying the WM area has the worst trains, come and see the metropolitan areas in Northern territory or the Valley lines, where 172s are a very distant dream at the moment!

Well, 172104 sounds awful. The 170s never did this. Don't get any ideas London midland 172s.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
how come older buses and trains, nothing rattles whilst on the new buses and trains something has to rattle or squeak.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Oh, and I meant 57109. So when will that return?

Rose tinted spectacles galore here! Pacers shake like hell, and as for buses - I've been on plenty shaky Routemasters, Atlanteans, Nationals, Fleetlines, N113s (christ those things rattled).

Rattling is not unique to modern vehicles. In some ways you're just far more likely to hear it now because all the other sounds have been screened so well!

Oh, just to add, the BBC said these will be the last BR trains going to Birmingham. What about the 153s and 165s?:D

class 150s ARE boneshakers they do rattle and roll ,but thats why we love em ! :D everythink that can go wrong has gone wrong, but they can and are still running they know all the faults on them and have a good team at TY that fix em and keep em running around Birmingham .
think back to the old the dmus they were even more of a boneshaker , and i miss them alot.
and when the 150s are gone we are going to miss them too .
so lets hope the boneshakers stick around for a while yet.

like everythink new them 172s wont last half has long and they will not have the character has whats gone before them .

Which is what they said when 150s replaced 1st Gen units. And when those units replaced steam locos. And probably when steam locos replaced horses.

Nothing new ever has character - that's because character takes time to build. Give it twenty years or so and there will be people bemoaning the loss of their beloved 172s, mark my words.

I agree with what my bro has said!

Nows the the time to spot them and re-spot them, take photos of every one at most if not all the routes and stations they work so had each day back and forth being thrapped by the driver.!!!!!!!

Give it 12months and the new class 172's will be old hat till they are re-painted if they ever will !!!!!

I bet they were saying the same about the your beloved 150's back in the day... They certainly said that about the first gen DMUs.

As others have said, you watch, in twenty five years time enthusiasts will absolutely love 172's. The mechanical gearbox will be the major draw...

They don't have to have a draw, they fact that they will be old and in need of replacement will be enough to get the 'juices flowing' for enthusiasts in 30 years

Driver training Worcester to Gloucester no testing involved.

I expect they are using Worcester-Gloucester for 2 reasons. It would be easier to get paths due to the operational restrictions and capacity on the other routes, and the main line provides an opportunity to take the unit up to it maximum speed. Gloucester is officially in LMs operational area, though they currently only run one weekly service, presumably to retain route knowledge. Test runs have gone to Hereford I believe to check for operational snags such as signal sighting.

As Regards the previous 2 postings. Worcester Drivers doing handling between Worcs & Gloucs as stated due to pathing issues on Snow Hill lines. 3 or 4 paths allocated daily but not all used. Training runs also taking place if needed to Hereford & Stourbridge/Tyseley (mainly if guards on board requiring to do door operation etc.).

Diagrams being reissued in Sept with 172's shown in place of 150's although not all sets will be in service in sept, so will be a mix & match until timetable change in Dec. although by then Snow Hill lines will be all 172's!!!. Aslong as unit diagrams do not change there should be 172 work in/out of New Street on Sat/Sun on the current 150 diagrams off Worcs.

also on the Worcs & Gloucs is one of the only two places for the 100mph running tests.
the other is tyseley / leamington but again has pathing problems.

the ty / leamington 100mph runs are on saturdays ,for drivers passing out.
theres one from ty at 11.07am ,13.07 ,15.07. sat only.

Do you happen to know which weekday diagrams are most likely to be operated by 172s first?

I would suggest you be prepared for the 172 diagrams to change daily in the 1st few weeks subject to available traincrews with traction knowledge. It will be the units that change diagrams rather than inconvenience traincrew with rostered turns and it will also allow more passengers to experience these wonderful new trains with the most uncomfortable seats since i travelled in east germany in the late 80's (wooden bench seats).

150 009 is now made up of 2 150/2 and a 150/1 meaning it is a 3 carriage train with a corridor connection at 1 end, has this always been like this?

Its ok, I found it out. It was 172341. The 150 on the right apparently caused a nuisance to some photographers who wanted a photo of the tornado because it pulled up as the tornado was storming towards them! They had a mad panic by having to move so as in order to get a good pic!

172338 arrived about 30 minutes before Tornado and was hurriedly shunted into the centre road. Did not hang around to see 172341 arrive, but by 4:30pm, 172338 was in the "long siding" s. of the station on the down side, then 172341 arrived from Gloucester, reversed up the siding, coupled to 338 and then waited....... The depot line it wanted was occupied by the Cathedrals Express so they could not be put away until 17:40!

the dumped 172 is still there at Tyseley again.

at TY today in the moring were 172332-339-340 and the highest number so far 345.

172341 came in from worcester through moor st at 11.21am & left again via snowhill at 12.23. seems all stations to worcester is now the place to get photos .
