It also has some more details of the proposed changes to services:-

December 2012: Withdrawal of Southern’s South London Line services between Victoria and London Bridge via Denmark Hill. The timing of many of Southern’s services to and from London Bridge will be changing as a result of the station works.
May 2013: Platforms 14-16 are taken out of use to enable redevelopment work. Some services will be retimed and platform changes required.

December 2014 to 2018 (TBC): Thameslink route services to and from central London diverted away from London Bridge.

2015 to 2016 (TBC): Services to Charing Cross unable to call at London Bridge.

2016 to late 2017 (TBC): Services to Cannon Street unable to call at London Bridge.


I guess this means that the Thameslink Services will all run from Blackfriars through to East Croydon on the Elephant and Castle route, which will add a bit of time on to the journey.

Commuters using London Bridge station will face years of disruption as work begins to refurbish it for Thameslink, Network Rail said.

The station will get new platforms, the UK's largest concourse, new lifts, escalators and entrances on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street.

Work will begin in May 2013, which will affect Southern, Thameslink and Southeastern services until 2018.

London's oldest station, which opened in 1836, is used by 55 million people.

The station will remain open during the redevelopment work, which is part of the £6bn project to upgrade Thameslink.

This phase will see upgrade work on seven miles of track and signalling equipment in south-east London around London Bridge station and rebuilding of several bridges.

The London Overground extension to Clapham Junction via London Bridge will open on 9 December, but at the same time Southern's south London line services between Victoria and London Bridge via Denmark Hill will be withdrawn.

From May 2013 three platforms - 14, 15 and 16 - will be closed to the public and Southern trains will be diverted to other platforms resulting in changes to train timings.

Between December 2014 and 2018 Thameslink trains will be diverted away from the station.

Southeastern trains to Charing Cross will not call at London Bridge for a year from 2015 and services to Canon Street will also not halt there between 2016 until late 2017.

Network Rail said the upgrade work will make the station more accessible, reduce congestion and increase the number of trains stopping at the station from 70 to 88 a day. Passenger capacity will also rise by 50%.

Robin Gisby, managing director of network operations at the rail company, said: "This will be the most ambitious redevelopment of any London station in a generation."

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "Passenger numbers have risen on an unprecedented scale in recent years and are now at their highest since the 1920s.

"Train passengers will be the biggest winners from this investment as London Bridge station is transformed from one of the capital's most congested stations into one of the most modern, accessible and passenger-friendly transport hubs in the UK."

In a joint statement, train operators First Capital Connect, Southeastern and Southern said: "This project will mean more trains and better journeys for passengers. We thank passengers for their understanding and patience whilst these essential improvement works are being delivered."

So an increase from 70 to 88 trains a day...hmmmm!!!!!!! Also London Overground also going via London Bridge?!!!!!!

I got a leaflet at london bridge. 70 capacity to 88 on the trains. That is roughly 3 extra seats per year of redevelopment.

It is unclear if there will be many more trains from Brighton (hasssocks)

Concerning the Thameslink route shall I assume that the trains will call at Elephant and Castle with tickets being accepted on the Northern Line and/or certain bus routes and the same should go for Charing Cross and Cannon Street?

Nope, the Bedford-Brighton line trains are unlikely to call at E&C, principally because they will be too long once the new trains arrive (crosses fingers). That is why a separate Brighton-London Bridge service is being provided.

If you are coming from the north and heading for London Bridge, I would expect ticket acceptance by alternative routes. But walking from Blackfriars will be quicker and almost certainly easier.

It would be a sensible move to reduce congestion at London Bridge. Also, are the Uckfield line services going to continue to run all the way through to London Bridge during this time?

I hope so. Perhaps it'd be worth stopping everything there for the interim period, to give that choice.

well - East Grinstead is a smidge south of Gatwick, be it on a different line. Can't wait for us to get some Thameslink action, will make my commute to Farringdon a little easier!

Just remember these services will be via Herne Hill so extended journey times of 10-15mins on todays to Blackfriars.
