A new tactic today, starting with a medium sized interchange station that I am very familiar with, from which I know the journey times to all points very well. But not too big or too central that would provide too many possibilities and wouldn't narrow it down much. Paid off... got it in two!

Today I was in the right part of the country but failed, tough one! Not a part of the network I know very well.

Although walking connections are often a dead giveaway, I couldn't for the life of me think what that particular length of walk could be* and second guessed myself!

I got today's in two goes, I've switched from using KGX as my starting point to another London terminus with more commonly used letters which helps :)

Yes that threw me too. And it's a part of the world I DO know fairly well!

I got it in 4 but my opening station helped. The short walking connection confused me a bit and when I saw the answer it wasn't where I thought it was going to be!

Yesterday took me all 8 to get though - again the short final connections from where all my guesses were coming from confused me

Hopefully everyone who wants to still do today's puzzle will either be done by now or will steer clear until they've done it- I don't know how to do spoiler tags!

I started at Leeds as per usual, but was thrown off until I remembered it uses data from the Sunday timetable... Initially I went completely the wrong direction from the wrong station in Manchester!
Once Shrewsbury gave me the first letter and a 2-minute walk, I managed to work it out!

STP is my usual starting point (LST would also work well using the same logic), not tried todays yet.

Seven today, they're definitely getting a bit more obscure! My first six guesses contained no yellow or green letters at all which did help eliminate some options.

You can't guess by the three letter code so if you don't know all the codes by heart you don't always know if you're guessing a station that is already disqualified by the greyed out letters! Or if you know all the letters already you don't always know the full name of the station that corresponds to it!

4 guesses - quite pleased with that! I had a yellow on my 2nd guess and was less than an hour away which helped.

Yesterday was a bit awkward, ended up with YELLOW GREEN YELLOW as my penultimate guess! Thursday was a bit easier - helped that I had green as my first letter which obviously helps with limiting options; found wednesday more difficult - only got it on 8th guess and that was after a lot of thinking for my last guess!

Yesterday I got it in three, it should have been two but I chose the wrong Lichfield!

But today, it's happened... got it in one!

Not in one, but this was pleasing given how far away my first guess was.

Lichfield City took me a while to get - it's not an area of the country I know very well! It was basically just an educated guess / and process of elimination based on the letters I knew

I had been looking at that part of the network when planning a trip recently, so it was fresh in my mind, and once I had worked out that I was changing at Birmingham New Street and had a L, I went for the one I knew better, but it was wrong!

Lichfield City was a tricky one. I started at Leeds so got the first letter, and in trying to work out where there'd be two 5 minute journeys to get there I went for Liverpool Central (I'd momentarily swapped Moorfields & Central in my head)... Of course the game assumes a walk anyway if going between Lime Street & Central. This gave me the last letter too, so it was easily gettable from there.

I'm considering changing my "go-to" starting station, Leeds hasn't been terrible but there's probably a statistically optimal station to start with- just as there are (presumably, I've never actually played) a number of words in Wordle which give a better chance of solving the puzzle. Obviously there are more five letter words than there are station codes, so it's not an exact comparison.

I'm sure someone somewhere has already asked the various "AI" services to give them the answer, but let's face it that's cheating! Perhaps in the spirit of the game I should just pick a different station out of the handful I'm most familiar with each time. Certainly if I'd started at Huddersfield instead of Leeds I'd have got Hereford on the second guess!

Normally I use the wonders of RTT and some of my maps to work out where it is, I'm not very good with journey times so RTT is quite needed for me, although I understand some consider it cheating.

Also I find Kings Cross to be a good starting station as the terminals all have mostly unique routes.

This was quite satisfying! I've decided on a new starting station which has been surprisingly helpful for the last week or so

Spoiler isn't a true spoiler but might give some hints which people may or may not want to know...

The 2 minute walking interchange was initially a bit confusing but probably a bit of a giveaway!

My wife and are enjoying our daily morning. competition!

We were wondering though when Welsh or Scottish locations will feature as it's very focussed on "central" England

it was Inverness one day last week!
And I got it in two! There aren't many 7 hour connections from Peterborough!

Is it me or was Shrewsbury done twice in the last few weeks? I didn't immediately guess it on Sunday or Monday (whenever it was) because I thought I'd seen it in the last month!

I haven't been able to remember every puzzle since I started playing, and can't remember if Shrewsbury has been used twice in that time... But if it has, it means there's no point in finding out what stations had come up before, as there's nothing to say they won't come up again. In the last few puzzles I've been picking a station from the handful that I have a personal connection with (and which are unlikely to add a needless extra step to the routing- so Taunton and Huddersfield are on my list, but Ormskirk, Hampton Court and Denby Dale aren't).
Some of the quirks of how it routes you are a bit odd, for example a change in Manchester from Leeds or Huddersfield to head south seems to always involve a walk from Victoria to Piccadilly, which is timed at 20 minutes.

That 20 minutes can be a giveaway though. I can't think of another 20 minute walk I have encountered, maybe Kings Cross to Euston but I think when it was Stafford, I was routed Kings Cross to Euston as a 5 minute tube journey.

I've switched to Ely as my starting station. Kings Cross is 1:15 away, Peterborough 40 minutes away, Norwich is 50 minutes away and I can go from there. I used Cambridge for a while until I realised that both Kings Cross and Peterborough were 50 minutes away, although it's usually pretty obvious that you're going through London. But there aren't many directions to go from Ely, and each timing to a major interchange is unique.

It's served me pretty well in the last week, since one answer was actually Ely and another was Inverness (7 hours on one train from Peterborough!)

STP is good:
5 mins walk to KGX
10 mins walk to EUS
5 mins train then 2 mins train to LST.
etc
Plus S and T are very common letters so you've got more chance of greening or yellowing part of the CRS code.

I think I've had Kings Cross to Euston as a 10 minute walk. The way it handles cross London transfers messes my thinking up, as Tube journeys aren't indicated as such until after the puzzle is solved (or you've used up all your guesses) and for some transfers the tube isn't used at all. The first time it sent me up the ECML from Huddersfield it confused me, as it insists on doing the Wakefield shuffle instead of just changing at Leeds.

I've avoided London starters because of how confusing the routings can be if the target station is accessed via another London terminal... but maybe it is worth a try!
