Loco number change while being preserved

When a loco has been saved & is preserved, can the owner change the numbers back to it's either original or after TOPS number instead of being say a 47/7 or 47/8.

e.g.

47 793 - used to be "D1778" :: October 23rd 1964 & "47183" :: February 1974

47 840 - used to be "D1661" :: February 13th 1965 & "47077" :: February 1974

You own it, you can paint whatever number you like on it!

If i owned a class 47, i'd paint the number 03 203 on it to annoy enthusiasts...

Conversely if you owned a steam loco which was registered for main line running, you could wind up the photters by re-numbering it to its 98xxx TOPS number (98715 'Scots Guardsman' for example).

It's already been done. A certain loco, which was in full BR condition, was renumbered back to 4472 and had her smoke deflectors taken off but not her single chimney restored. Result, deflectors went back on and we had a loco with a 'wrong' number.

Whether it applied to main line registered diesels is another question. If restoration involves removing certain features (for example disabling the ETH to restore steam heating) then you have just changed the sub-class, so leaving the xx4xx number is inaccurate.

Incidentally, if the 5AT ever gets built, I want her to be 98501.

If the owner of a loco wants to change number, name, livery or anything else it's entirely their own business.
