Location recording

As anyone who's looked at my information on here should have seen I'm a music student, I am currently composing an electroacoustic piece of music that needs some audio samples of trains, I have to use my own recordings however so stock recordings are useless.

I would like to go on to a train and record the interior sounds of it.
Would there be huge problems with this?
I'd most likely choose a quiet service as there is nothing worse then people asking you what you're doing every time you hit the record button. (Exaggerating but it does happen) :roll:

As I live near Huddersfield (most of the time) I'm thinking the Penistone line might be best due to the Pacer's?

And I guess to add some intrigue to this, what's the noisiest train out there?

Could try a class 150, 153 or 156 - not much sound deadening, it seems!

I think any train will be good for what you are looking for however it may be a good idea to speak to the guard/train manager just to let them know what you are doing, you could even ask the guard to make extra announcement for better realism.

The A stock on the metropolitan line are great for sounds but that's a bit out of your reach.

For sheer noisiness, I would agree that you are on the right lines with the pacer, although there is a lot to be said for the 'music' of the 153, I wouldn't reccomend a Voyager or HST if youre aiming to get any type of outside noise though, If memory serves the last time I was on either I couldn't hear any.

Well I have to say a pacer is what I'm hoping will sound best but I'd have to do this somewhere between 2am-4/5am because too early, you get drunks etc and too late you get commuters packing in.

TPE run services through the night to Manchester but these are all 185's which in my experience are quite quiet. Earliest Northern is around 7am which is too late.

Does anyone know any services that are nearly always quiet? Even if not from Huddersfield.

Actually this is getting quite hard, finding a service at night that isn't run by a 185 or 43.
Though there is a promissing service from Crewe to Manchester at 00:44, 30 minute gap between there and Manchester so plenty of recording time too.

Does anyone know what class would be used on this service? Would I be right in assuming a 15* ?

That's a Northern Rail service isn't it? If it is then it will most certainly be a 15x or possibly a 14x.

I've got some good audio of the inside of some Northern Line stock as it went between Mill Hill East and somewhere further down (wasn't a shuttle)...

Do you have to use your own recordings for copyright reasons or for other reasons? If the former, you can use mine if you want (under Creative Commons...)

I have to explain how I recorded them and provide evidence so, thanks , but I'll have to do it myself.

Class 185s run through the night and have some good, throaty rumbles on engine noises
