Yes Longsight in the ex Eurostar depot but not one in the main depot as far as I know. There is one at Queens Rd for the Metrolink too. There is wheel Lathe at the TPE depot at Ardwick.

Does Bournemouth depot still have one or was it removed when Northam depot opened?

For Metrolink we have one at Queens Road and one currently being installed at Trafford. It is intended to have both operational.

Does anyone know if the London Transport Museum Depot has one?

I went round it recently and it's geared up for heavy duty restoration/maintenance.

Does anyone know of a list of all the Wheel Lathes in the UK?

Alternatively, shall we see if we can compile one?

Locations identified so far:

  • Allerton TMD (Northern)
  • Ashford depot (Hitachi for Southeastern)
  • Beckton depot (Docklands Light Railway)
  • Canton TMD, Cardiff (Arriva Trains Wales)
  • Craigentiny TMD, Edinburgh (Virgin East Coast)
  • Crewe Arriva Traincare (Arriva)
  • Crown Point, Norwich (Greater Anglia)
  • Etches Park, Derby (East Midlands Trains)
  • Illford Depot (Greater Anglia)
  • Kirkdale TMD, Liverpool (Merseyrail)
  • Longsight Electric TMD, Manchester (Alstom for Virgin West Coast)
  • Northfields Depot (London Underground)
  • Northam Traincare Depot, Southampton (Siemens for South West Trains)
  • Polmadie T&RSMD, Glasgow (Alstom for Virgin West Coast)
  • Reading TMD (Great Western Railway)
  • Selhurst T&RSMD, London (GTR Southern)
  • Shields Road TMD, Glasgow (ScotRail)
  • Slade Green depot, Dartford (Southeastern)
  • St Phillips Marsh, Bristol (Great Western Railway)
  • Stonebridge Park depot, Wembley (Alstom)
  • Thameslink Three Bridges depot (Siemens for GTR Thameslink)
  • Tyseley Locomotive Works (Vintage Trains)
  • Tyseley TMD (London Midland)

Reading doesn't have a wheel lathe, the Turbo fleet use Old Oak Common.

All Reading has at the moment is a hole in the ground

Not sure if it will happen, but the amended planning application for the new Chiltern depot at Banbury includes a wheel lathe.

Interesting stuff! I've updated the list from the locations firmly posted, I wonder how many more there are?!

Is it worth having possibles list on the first post as those who know are likely to verify either way in that case?

Also some older depots are more likely to have the older type of wheel lathes that require the wheelsets to be removed from the bogies such as LU's Acton Works and these are likely to be much less obvious and harder to verify.

The Crewe Arriva one is south of the station, yes? Because there used to be one at Crewe Electric. I remember it being demonstrated at an open day, not sure if it's still there. I'm pretty sure that there was one in the works too.

There used to be one at Thornaby too, it was earmarked to be relocated to Tyne Yard (it was fairly new), but did that move ever take place?

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Before the closure of BREL York there used to be a Hegenscheidt lathe used for reprofiling coach wheelsets.
Was this lathe removed or is it still in place?
Seeing that NWR now use the place for their stock.

The one at Allerton has a small yellow tractor to haul the carriages through. Are there many of these elsewhere?
Yes, St Philips Marsh has one, Siemens E of Soton has one. There's probably a few more too.
