Yeah, we did a lot of chatting at Sutton too, the only benefit with Sutton being that you can get a change of scenery every now and then, so you can chat at college, chat in the park, chat on the high street, chat in Starbucks, chat outside Ann Summers...

I dragged my mates down to the old Sutton Park station a couple of times, needles to say though, as non-rail enthusiasts they weren't impressed by it's empty muddy yard and pile of ballast.

Slightly off topic, but natives of Leeds frequently give directions in terms of landmarks that are no longer there. As in "Turn right at The Grenadier - the pub that closed 15 years ago, then we'll be opposite the Grocery shop (that was bombed out in the war)" Never come across this so much in other areas. And have a guess where "Yeadon Aerodrome" is known as.

That would be Leeds-Bradford Airport. And I agree that if you ask a Leeds resident for directions you will often get this, even I would find it confusing sometimes and I'm from West Yorkshire!

The line is still in use IIRC marra, I haven't seen anything down there recently either but then again I'm seldom up there these days. There are moves afoot to reopen the Boldon East curve at the other side of Brockley Whins station to allow freight from the south direct access to and from the Sunderland/Durham Coast.

All the coal trains use it, usualy one or two a day, which either do down the ECML or reverse at Pelaw to go down the Durham Coast.

As for Wakefield/Wakey, Pontefract/Ponte or Ponty, why do people from Normanton pronounce it Norminton?

They would be correct. It is pronounced Marri-ban or Marle-bone and not Marry-le-bone.

Whitehaven station, on the Cumbrian Line, is still called "Bransty", by some old un's. This is/was to distinguish it from the other Whitehaven station called Corkickle.

Older people in Dublin still call Connolly Station 'Amiens Street', Pearse 'Westland Row', and Heuston 'Kingsbridge', the proper names of these stations before they were renamed after traitors in 1966

Last time I was in Derby there were modern pedestrian signs pointing to "Midland Station".

Most stations seem to be just called "town", as in "single to town please", leaving me to guess which town they refer to!

I actually thought Yeadon Airport was its proper name until the 1980s, but a search came up with

Indeed, it's in Dunbridge (such as it is) anyway.

My wife who used to live in Awbridge refers to it as Dunbridge, and it is of course in the village of that name. Mottisfont I thought was added because of the Mottisfont Abbey ruins nearby.

Dean is in West Dean, Wilts., and not East Dean, Hants., yet the boundary does its lovely dance along the road and of course bisected what was the villages' pub a stone's throw from the station.
