If this is correct then absolutely a fuss about nothing.....

However, more widely is somewhat more dangerous - a practising Muslim for example might have an issue (just redone Equal Ops and Diversity at work and a similar scenario is included in the training......)

Another slow news day. The tweet was in response to someone actually asking if they should go to the pub.

LM (and several other TOCs) have led the way in providing honest and factual information to commuters. It's a shame the Metro cannot say the same for itself.

The problem with Twitter is you see all the responses straight away but don't see what they are in response without doing a little digging.

Exactly right. LM perhaps a little naive in this specific instance, but I feel sorry for David Whitley (who actually sent the tweet!), who I know works very hard in maintaining the feed.

The metro enjoys bashing the railway, every other day there is usually an article putting the railway down in some way or another. When they don't have a fresh story they'll dig up an old one and recycle it.

I have no problem with them reporting the railway in a negative manner as long as the story justifies it, but in many cases it doesn't. Would be quite funny if Network rail and TOCs told them they were no longer welcome distribute their paper on railway property .

I'm a little saddened that LM had to apologise for this. LM has one of the best Twitter feeds going, and that little touch of personal attention on a person-to-person level was heartening.

How many times do we hear of people annoyed at robotic, automated generic announcements or lack of personal interaction during times of disruption? Well, now we see why it all happens, because some anally retentive onanist would complain or the media would seize upon it and stick the knife in just so they have mud to fling at a popular target.

The original story was based on the reply LM made after some individual tweeted at LM and was (ISTM) having a go at them for doing nothing about people being hit by trains. The expression used by the questioner was something like 'shame on you LM for allowing this', the answer was something like 'there's nothing much you can do about someone jumping off a platform, as shown here:

As mentioned by earlier posts here, the LM answer telling someone they should go to the pub was an immediate reply to someone asking explictly IF they should go to the pub because of the disruption - but the Birmingham post quoted it immediately after showing the other posts, out of context.

It sounds like good, sound advice to me, whether solicited or not Especially given that Selly Oak, as SS4 has said offers a good range of decent pubs.

It is a shame and I would be disappointed to see LM reign back as I have found them very helpful on both Twitter and FixMyTransport. And again Metro takes things too far. Personally I see nothing wrong with it, and would be more than happy to take that advice. Its a shame that a free rag that relies on the railways for its distribution persists in slamming them at every oppertunity. As said though wonder what would happen if NR told them that they couldnt distribute on the railway? They would kick up the biggest fuss known to man.

Having followed the whole episode live on Twitter I thought the LM employee did a superb job. I remember thinking at the time how good the responses were, before all this fuss brewed up. As for the "shame on you London Midland, shame on you Network Rail" contribution, it made me see red and I had to exercise some self-restraint to resist wading in with some choice words myself. What does that idiot think LM and NR can do about people jumping off platforms? Chain everyone to a railing and only release them when their train has arrived?

Looking at all the TOC Twitter feeds I am filled with admiration at how slickly and professionally the staff deal with dumb, intemperate, petty and sometimes quite offensive Tweets.

LM have nothing to apologise for. I reckon that the majority of people can see what the tweet was all about, but there are always one or two who will huff and puff at the slightest thing. Mountain and molehill springs to mind.
