Not normally interested in such matters, but "Bin" 321406 was down at Ilford CS yesterday in full FCC eye-bending stripes.

Not sure why these units are getting base coat of dark blue rather than WAGN purple like the Cl317's. For some reason it just doesn't look as good.

Thanks Tottenham Flyer.

Also, 158788 & 158862 are in for refurb and relivery - removing the last of the Central Trains units.

Correction to my last post. 321 315 is still at Ilford. 321 318 has gone to Doncaster.

Its not in the front list but I may have missed in in-thread, 321427 is all shiny and NX silver on Ilford aswell. Believe 321402 is at Doncaster to lose Silverlink colours in favour of the just-as-bad,if-not-worse FCC colours.

Thanks 87015 - I had information that 321427 had been away for refurb - thanks for the confirmation of now being in service/back from refurbishment [thanks Tottenham Flyer!].

I dont think its in service. 321 426 still hasn't been seen in service yet, and thats been back a while now! The only ex LM 321's NXEA appear to be using are 421, 422 and 423.

I do believe that although 426 & 427 have been to Wabtec for there C6 and a re-livery, they have then be altered/refurbished back at Ilford. I am unaware if that has happened to 427 yet but when 426 visited Ilford shortly after coming back from Doncaster it was then sent to Orient Way sidings along with the un-livered 425, with the instructions that they were only to be used in Emergencies.

(The FCC 321 are the same they get C6'd and Livery at Wabtec and refurbishment at Hornsey)

421, 422 & 423 indeed have been altered to work with the other NXEA 321(s) and have been found here, there and everywhere!

Shenfield Metros
Walton Shuttle
Peak Clacton/Colchester/Southend trains
They have even found there way on to replacement Liverpool Street to Norwich services!

When we first got them, 321 421 had the pleasure of the Romford to Upminster shuttle for quite a while so Ilford could clear the backlog of defective 315's. (Going off topic here!)

321421/422/423 are in regular use. 425/426 have worked at least once, but arn't used normally. Only know they worked because they failed and it got mentioned!! 427 has not seen use AFAIK, it and 426 were both on IL today.

To sum up the NXEA situation, 321313/316/318 and 317890 are all shown as undergoing C6X attention which means a repaint. There also appears to be a 357 on IL being repainted, not sure if this is still 357044 mentioned as there in late August?

321313 returned to Ilford on Thursday Evening, releasing 321318 to go to Wabtec

Also I would hazard a guess that 357044 is already back in traffic, as a few other 357(s) have been seen at Ilford since that report.

357029 & 357001 have both been done in the new livery

Thanks DjU for your update and confirmation - have added to front page data base.

Please continue to keep us updated - as now with Totenham Flyer and 87015, NXEA and c2c will be "state of the art" for timeliness!

NXEA news

anglia-gen have reports of 321316 on its return from Doncaster today.

There is a trip in the opposite direction booked for tomorrow, and apparently 321317 is the intended unit. Hopefully this will be confirmed if it does go tomorrow.

Also there is an error on the front page 321315 is listed as having new livery, this unit hasn't visited Doncaster yet.

On the 317 front it appears that 317511 *may* eventually return to service, as it has been seen being put back together in the Sheds at Ilford presumably for its C6X. For those who don't know, 317511 has been out of action for well over 2 years, after what i believe was a problem with its control desk.

I did put a message on my post which said I'd incorrectly put 321315 as going to Doncaster.

There are so many roumers flying round about 511, but this was taken out of service due to an arson attack. 3 coaches were damaged, but I believe have been repaired, but since this train has been robbed of lots of parts. 317 502 was also set on fire at Hertford East, but only one coach was damaged, so the one good coach of 511 was put onto 502, hence 502 is still in service.

Although out of sevice, it does still receive the mods that all the other 317's have, ie its been stripped of its 'one' livery, and has had cab air con mods. Heres hoping that it does return to service.

Yes I've read about some the trials and tribulations of unit 511:D poor thing!

I believe the fire damaged DTOS of 502 was repaired and then 502 and 511 were reformed in late 2008. As you say 511 has been heavily robbed of bits other the years to keep the other units going.

It's been seen in the shed every few months, as you say receiving the normal mods, but the sighting last week it seemed to be getting new parts attached including new windows etc. Considering most of the other ex 317/1s have been C6d, the truly seems to be 511 best chance to return!

Fingers crossed

Oooh really? Has it got a pantograph yet? Thats one thing its been missing for a long time!

All of the 317/1's (that are now 317/5's) have been C6d except 512, and thats the one that needed C6(ing!) the most. Tatty old thing. 512 was C4'd last week (new bogies & pan)

There is a roumer that when NXEA get the 379's, some of the 317/6 are being scrapped. They are the most unreliable 317's NXEA have, so a few units will be canobalised for parts and then scrapped. (only a roumer though!) Going off topic....

Rumours, rumours everywhere.

317511 and 317502 both suffered a damaged vehicle in seperate arson attacks. Rather than being two units down, 511 gave up it's undamaged DTOS(A) to replace 502's damaged coach forming two hybrid units. However, this was done significantly earlier than late last year.

The future of 317511 is still in the balance. It has at least been moved into the New Shed at Ilford and has become a semi-permanent feature on the blocks on 5 road. What is less clear is whether or not it's being put back together or taken apart. Either way, it's getting quite a lot of attention with usually about half a dozen fitters "tags" hanging from the "Not to be Moved" board. I'm down at Ilford later today and will see what I can find out. The modifications it has been receiving are because the unit is still "on the books", even if it hasn't left Ilford depot for the best part of three years. However, you will notice that the unit still doesn't carry the NatEx interim white band (click and click).

The rumour about the Cl317/6's sounds highly unlikely to me, as my impression of Cl317 reliability is that each sub-class seems to fail equally. It may appear that the Cl317/6's fail more often but that is probably just down to this being the most numerous sub-class with 24 units compared to 15 Cl317/5's (minus 1 for 511), 9 Cl317/7's and 12 Cl317/8's. Additionally, apart from the cosmetic differences between them and one or two very minor technical variations (and I do mean minor), all the Cl317 sub-classes are EXACTLY the same underneath. There is nothing different about the Cl317/6's that would make them more or less reliable than any of the others.

What is supposed to happen when the Cl379's appear is that some WA services will be strengthened to 12 cars and hopefully some others (e.g. the Stratfords) will be made up to 8 cars. To allow for 12 car operation, some Cl317's will be fitted with SDO, which will almost certainly result in the creation of yet another sub-class. As the services earmarked for 12 car operation are primarily the Cambridges, I expect that these modified units will be drawn from the Cl317/6 pool.

As expected 321317 did head off to Doncaster last Tuesday.

Also 321428 was reported heading north through Peterborough towards Doncaster today - as of the start on the month this unit was still in use with LM, so I think it gone straight to Wabtec before even getting to NXEA.

Purely a guess but I think theres a chance we may see an increase in the number of ex LM 321/4s heading to Doncaster for NXEA liveries in the coming month or so.

The initial 5 FCC 321 have been done when 321402 leaves Doncaster for Hornsey tomorrow, 428 has technically gone up to follow that in the refurb queue.

Also NXEA announce in the morning what services will be lengthened from 8 to 12 car in the December 2009 Timetable, utilising the ex LM 321/4s. 321428 is only the 3rd of the units to visit Doncaster, so that would leave a lot of Silverlink liveried units in service.
(Bar the previously discussed exploits of 421,422 & 423!)

NXEA 321 318 came back to Ilford the day after NXEA 321 424 left for Doncaster

NXEA 321 319 is on its way to Doncaster today.

Presumably 425 will be the next of the ex-LM units to be sent to Doncaster meaning a run of 424/425/426/427/428 as the 5 or so units required for the December 2009 TT.

SURPRISE - NXEC 43318 and 43206 has been liveried into NXEC - only 43313 remains in GNER scheme.

43318 seen on a Jonathan McGurk photograph.
