The train crew depots are based at Lime Street itself and are Northern, FTPE and Virgin.

The Northern depot has quite a decent route card from what I understand and covers places such as Man Vic/Picc/Airport, Huddersfield, Warrington, Preston and Blackpool.

FTPE's depot has just opened, and I assume they cover places such as Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

I suspect Virgin do just the WCML down to London as well as diversions, although they can be quite difficult for people to get into 'off the street'.

VT drivers sign Holyhead too (or certainly used to; it's actually the closest driver depot to it surprisingly).

unfortunately tube driver experience isn't counted so have to go on my mainline experience with southern (still have to give a years service mind you)

The nearerst crew depot to Liverpool is at kirkdale, with other depots being at Southport and Birkenhead North.

KD and SP sign the three Northern Line routes, which are Southport - Hunts Cross and Liverpool to Kirkby/Ormskirk. BHN sign the four Wirral line routes which run from Lierpool - Chester/Ellesmere port/New Brighton/West Kirby.

Units signed are Class 507/508 EMU's, which are virtually indistinguishable. Also, Merseyrail guards don't sell tickets, so there is no commission to be made on top of your basic salary and overtime.

Your best bet is Northern who pretty much perpetually consider applications from qualified drivers all year round. Lots of good changes happening up here with the Northern hub etc, and hopefully some decent stock coming our way soon. Get your foot in the door and then move on if you so wish.

I agree. Northern need drivers ASAP because somebody is always leaving for another TOC or being fired for a variety of reasons. Bloody good TOC to work for if you're reliable and don't do silly things! Wigan Wallgate is by far the best depot to work for in terms of variety but Liverpool isn't far off.

Huh? It applies to any other good employer. You show loyality and they'll be loyal to you. There are plenty of bad employers out there who show no loyality to good employees - Northern isn't one of them

The guards base on the wirral line is Birkenhead Central. Birkenhead North is just used for breaks. I would vouch that Merseyrail and Northern are good companies to work for.

Any large employer like Northern will have a higher staff turnover than a much smaller employer who pays slightly better. If you do your job and are reliable, Northern are a great TOC to work for. They look after you, pay you more than a decent, living wage and are there for you if ever you need advice, training or any welfare needs.

We have Lancaster, Morcambe and Barrow (South Lakes)don't forget which are magnificent routes to work. Also Liverpool (Via Earlestown and Garswood), Manchester (via Bolton, Walkden and Eccles), Buxton, Preston, Rochdale, Airport,Southport, Kirkby and Warrington ECS.

Yes, a few still do sign it although I don't personally. There is still a direct service from Wigan to Buxton every evening. I only sign as far as Stockport as far as that route is concerned.

What is your authority on the correlation between staff turnover and satisfaction in the driving grade on the railways?

Northern have good terms and conditions compared to many TOCs; the pay is competitive; the rest day pattern is second to none; route variety is considerable at many of the depots. The traction is falling to bits and we don't currently have RDW which drives many people into the arms of TPE and the likes, but overall in addition to retirement, sickness, expansion and those who are told to leave - the turnover of staff is no suprise. Many drivers have, unfortunately for them, no experiences of a working life outside the grade and are thus complacent with their work ethic - which explains the loss of staff from dismissal.
