are 185s still able for production? If they could make 4-car variants this would be great, you could then turn one of the ends of the train in to first class for those who want more room on long journeys, if funding was available from the DfT

I am not sure that is actually completely the case.
True, the service is used by lots of people travelling short local journeys like, Liverpool-Manchester, Manchester-Sheffield, Sheffield-Nottingham, Nottingham-Grantham etc.

However, although there are very few people who travel the whole journey from Norwich to Liverpool, there are very large numbers of passengers who travel on this service for fairly long journeys of 2 hours or considerably more.
Some of the journeys (and their returns) very popular on this route are:
Norwich to both Nottingham and Sheffield
Nottingham to Manchester and Liverpool
Peterborough to Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool
Even Peterborough to Norwich and Liverpool to Sheffield are not short journeys and these are very well used.
The longer journey opportunities that this route provides also from stations not listed above like Warrington, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Grantham, Ely are also important to many people.

This is a very important route for passengers wanting to make longer journeys without the inconvenience of having to change trains. Lots of people do not want to change trains and would often rather put up with slightly longer journey times.
It is much more than a series of local routes joined together.

There would be far more people willing to use this service if it wasn't so overcrowded. I agree that perhaps sometimes there are not as many longer distance travellers as you would expect on this route but if you have had to endure a 4 or 5 hour journey in a grossly overcrowded 2 car 158 would you use it again?
With longer trains and more space to spread out and move around the train I am sure there would be a big increase in the number of longer journeys made on this service and then, yes, perhaps even a significant number of passengers travelling the whole route.

...but Peterborough to Norwich and Liverpool to Sheffield are still journeys of two hours or less...

There's a danger to assume that, because a service runs from A to B, that there's a demand to get from A to B. If you want to travel from Lancashire to East Anglia then the twice a day Manchester - Norwich plane takes a quater of the time the train will. In fact, it may be quicker to take a frequent service to London and change there, such is the slow speed.

And, even if you want to assume that there are a significant number of people travelling over 100 miles, then what about the lack of direct links from Liverpool/ Manchster/ Sheffield/ Nottingham to Cambridge? Or from the East Midlands/ South Yorkshire to Blackpool? Or from Manchester to Derby/ Leicester? There's no way you can cater for a direct train to satisfy all of these...

EMT's Class 156s are substantially nicer than their unrefurbished Class 158s. I'd welcome the arrival of some from Northern or anywhere else for that... the only issues would be during the summer months - they're not air conditioned. It's also a pitty they cant be put into a 3-car formation (can they?) as this would be perfect.

As has been suggested, splitting some 158s to form 3-car units seems to be the way forward for the moment at least. 185s would be lovely but we've got to remember the earliest we'll see new units on this line will be 2015.

172s would be OK. I'm sure people would make do with 15 minutes extra on a journey for a comfortable train.

Oh really? Wow they're quite versatile beasts aren't they? 3-car 156s would be great in the colder weather.

Id rather have one of EMTs 156s than those horrible green ex CT 158s which give me pins and needles in my feet and legs because basically I like Chapman seats as the posture etc is good plus 156403 is a pretty fast one too as with almost all of them as 408 is a bit loud and sluggish still they keep to the time table as 403 only turned up two minutes late at Widnes on the 20.05 to LLST but arrived about 4 Mins early.

As for services to London yes I thin there are too many but yet i would like to see EMT run a one per day in each direction from Liverpool to London St Pan Via Sheffield and Nottingham with a HST or Meridian say the 07.47From LLST.

London Midland do a 10.19am from LLST to London Euston which I think at one time was the Stanstead Airport Service so cannot see what is stopping EMT as if they want to improve there reputation on the Liverpool-Manchester-Sheffield section of the Norwich route this would be the way to do it even a Summer Service from L-Pool to Skegness would be ideal.

One thing that has made me think about this route is them stopping at LSPW which I don’t really think it needs to but yet I think it would be better for the Liverpool-Norwich to swap paths with the LLST-Manchester Airport Service and go Via Newton Le Willows to Norwich and to Manchester Airport Via LSPW giving a Link Between Manchester Airport and Liverpool Airport.

Photo of 156403 in LLST http://www.railwayphotos.fotopic.net/p55421284.html

The 10.19 used to be Virgin Trains Voyager to Reading i think? the Stansted Services were instead of the New Street Services. i.e. 1 to New St every hour, and 1 to Stansted every 2 hours. Thinking on, LLST has lost a Cardiff service, Reading, Poole, Edinburgh, Barrow, Cambridge, Stansted services to name but a few over recent years, its not good!

With regards to the LLST - St Pancreas via Sheff and Notts, cant see how this would work, as passengers from Liverpool would use the Virgin services, Warrington would use the Bank Quay Virgin services, Manchester and Stockport also have Virgin Services to London, so it would be pointless really, and only beneficial from Sheffield and beyond. Im not quite sure that Warrington Central and Widness platforms are long enough, as with LSPW, so it would be a direct service to Manchester i guess? in which case if it was an early morning service then it could be considered!

Ive heard the latest is a new service from May direct to Glasgow on a new operator called Glasgow Trains

The only way to do this is for EMT to invest in Voyagers or Meridians, 5 coaches.. very very unlikely

or for EMT to simply 4 coach every train with 158 156's.. and cut out stations like LSPW, Widnes, Dore, Alfreton, etc etc and just call at the major cities. As for the smaller stations, get them to use local services to the next major station.

ive also read lately that 172's are to replace 150's on the Snow Hill - Dorridge route, which is a real slow stopper service.

That signals to me that London Midland priorities local stopper services with better trains, that one of the longest cross country routes in the country. When does EMT's franchise on the LLST - Norwich run out? Unless XC take over, i can only ever see this service being split into a LLST - Nottingham and a Nottingham - Norwich both operated by Different operating companies

CrossCountry run from/through Birmingham don't they? Where would be the operational base for Norwich-Liverpool?

Though yes I do agree, it's misplaced in EMT's franchise. I still think splitting Central Trains was a mistake - I don't understand why/how "splitting a franchise to reduce the total number in the midlands" works.

Unbelievably, from May 2008 trains will occasionally call at Wymondham and Attleborough. This is useful for me, but seems like a crazy thing to do to enhance this route for most.

What a good idea....
Go back to what the service was when it first began in the late 1980's when it was operated by 156's before the 158's were built.
Then it was alternate hours Norwich-Liverpool and Harwich/Cambridge-Blackpool.
This would provide far more through journey opportunities and 4 car trains every 2 hours with a train every hour on the major part of the route between Ely and Manchester with connections at Ely and Manchester.
But EMT would still not have enough stock to operate 4 carriages on all trains.

I think EMT do need more stock but from what i have seen andsaw in lInclonshire on 6th DEC 06 which Was Lincoln Chrsitmas Market day it is a case of look affter your own with regadrs to extra carriges with Saturday being the worst for over crowding.

And judging from what i saw yesterday there was only one Liverpool-Norwich diagram Strenthened which was the one which works 1M4 21.42 M-PIC-NOTT which was formed of 158863 and 153376 three car working and althogh i did't see the 17.52 from LLST to NOR i suspect that this would have only been two carriges and yet this is the one that gets all th Football Supporters on a Saturday.

They do need mopre stock in order to reduce the overcrowding but yet they don't seem to be doing enogh to sort it out as they should be pulling out all the stops to do so not jsut giving in to DFT and there stupid decisons.

I went past crewe works just opposit the station there a few times yesterday and there was at least to sets of ex Virgin carriges sitting doing nowt so why can't EMT hire theese in.

Even if it ment splitting the service again at Sheffield on a Saturday and some peak Jouneys it would be better than cramming everyone it to a 2 car DMU.

Plus they could even do this with the sapre HST sets like they do for the specials for the Lincoln Chrsitmas Market.

This is where i come to the conclusuion that they just whant to look affter there own area as if there Local Servces suffered the slightest overcrowding then they would be pulling out all the stops to solve it.

aAnd now that they have got the three extra 153s from Northern that must mean that three 158s are free so why insit on sending two carriges on each diagram on a Saturday.

EMT moan at DfT for being silly buggers; DfT responds by stripping EMT of their franchise, and probably SWT as well knowing their policy. EMT can only do so much, ultimately the top top top decisions lie with DfT.

Because the 153s have arrived to cover the new timetable. There is no more spare capacity than before, as there are more services to run.

May I suggest you employ the use of a spell-checker.

Glasgow Trains have an ORR application, but as yet no confirmed rail industry partner, stock, or paths.
Where are LLST and LSPW? I checked the National Rail website for station abbreviations, but that only lists the 3-letter ones.

I assume LLST is Liverpool Lime Street and that LSPW is Liverpool South Parkway. Can anyone specify the new 153 arrivals so I can add them to my database in the livery thread?

Oh Didn't know that but i surpose that would explian the Central Trains Centre Carpet for which 313 has.

I would be very surprised if 313 had CT carpet

Didn't get a look inside it when i video'ed it on Saturday so Can't be sure but im not convinced

given that it had North West Regional Railways carpet the lifetime it was with FNW and then moved to Arriva Trains Wales after that

302 Heart of wessex on the other hand has CT seats,Wales and west carpet and FGW safety notices

Photo of it her its only the Centre Carpet that has been replaced:-

http://www.railwayphotos.fotopic.net/p55521139.html

Also last night there was a unit failure at ELY which was what should have been the 20.05 at WIDNES for which they managed to get 158881 to cover from NOTTINGHAM so i think EMT should improve there maintenance if they are going to run such long distances services.

158881 Is not in the best of health at present as apparently it keeps on cutting out and is not supposed to go on long routes so just shows how bad things are in the maintenance at Nottingham Depot.

This appears to be another case of Looking after there own and anything that goes on odd ball routes like Liverpool-Norwich can just F**K Off that is the impression from what i see and experience and have experienced.

Or how tight the diagrams are due to stock shortages that the maintenance teams have not the time with each unit to sort them out properly. Could also be a legacy of poor maintenance from previous lessors of the unit.

Err, please can we calm down a bit? Firstly, no SHOUTING thanks. Secondly, mind your language and, thirdly, please could you try to spell and punctuate a little? It can be hard to read your posts on occasions.

Many thanks!
