Hairmyres seems to have a reasonable flow to the hospital / college etc. nearby.

Forgot about Hairmyres, yes does get a bit! East Kilbride is very car centric with areas not served well by public transport.

Kilwinning - Ayr is one that’s relatively popular with students travelling to the college and university.

Edinburgh Park, South Gyle perhaps too.

Ive noticed in Ayrshire people using the train locally say for example between Kilwinning and Irvine.

Yes, that's the case.

Ardrossan - Kilwinning - Irvine is one that is done a lot by people, youths in particular who don't want to pay for the bus as pre-covid it would be rare that you would actually get checked. It's 7 minutes from Saltcoats to Kilwinning, then 4 minutes to Irvine. You'd be unlucky if you got caught.

You get quite a few school kids heading up Airedale to Skipton. Plus those working at the Skipton Building Society HQ, etc.

Places with big business parks tend to be the ones which have the counter-peak flows. I’d imagine such flows are heavily concentrated on a very limited number of trains though.

I seem to remember Welwyn Garden City is one such example as well. Not sure about to Welwyn in the morning, however I can remember pre-ThamesLink the 1720 departure from Welwyn towards London used to fill up to the point where most seats on an 8-car would be taken. Barring schools traffic this would probably be the only London service from Welwyn which would fill to that extent.

Same on local roads, packed around 1730 due to business parks emptying out.

Business parks (pre-Covid) do seem to have a ridiculously rigid "9 to 5" culture, where transport problems are caused because everybody insists on leaving by car at the same time!

Merseyrail Liverpool to Chester and vice versa as you'd expect.

Also the first couple of Wrexham Central to Bidston (connect for Liverpool) of a morning pre covid (particularly the 0830ish arrive/depart Bidston) would take a healthy load from North Wales/Neston/Heswall to Bidston, where there would be a similarly healthy load waiting at Bidston to board it back into North Wales.

Edit - I say healthy load, its not exactly a busy line with its hourly frequency and poor reliability, but definitely about as busy as it gets, most seats filled.

Leeds, Burley Park and Headingley to Horsforth is quite busy in the morning peak, as students and staff head up towards Leeds Trinity University. The 0829 departure from Leeds is perfect for a 9am start.

Most of them cross the road to take the shuttle bus - we hardy souls still walk up the hill, even after 30 years

SE Metro into London Bridge can be busy in the evening peak. Not packed but much busier than a decade or two ago.

Cumbrian coast has commuter flows to and from Barrow, Sellafield, Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport and Carlisle.
The fact that there are so many potential journeys has meant that the timetable has to be targeted at the greater numbers (Barrow, Sellafield and Carlisle), leaving other places with a less than ideal service.

I don’t think the Cumbrian Coast has ever had such a good service that it now enjoys, Covid apart.

Better than historically it used to be.

In the new timetable effective next week, the last train to Carlisle (from Barrow - Mon-Fri) is the 2018 (arr. 2241).

Used to be much earlier!

From Carlisle, it's the 1909 all sheds (Mon-Sat), arrives Barrow 2141.
