It was with the Track Inspection Coach, and it was due to Mk1/2 route clearance problems; this was despite the branch being used by the same type of stock many times before. Not a problem, meant an early finish for the intrepid crew.

I can't even begin to think why MENTOR would want to go to Cwmbargoed!

holiday? Nice trip out? Change from Derby? nice biew of the Welsh hills? Intrest in industrial disposal points? Are we going to wire this as part of the wales electrification scheme?

or mistaken identifcation of Mentor perhaps :D

It has puzzled me that 40145 was allowed to use Lifford Curve, but not Upperby Curve. I thought the Lifford Curve was quite tight, so why isn't it banned from using it?

I seem to recall reading that Voyagers are banned from Stansted due to the ventilation issues - only 170s are allowed that far
I think it's that Diesels are not permitted on the "Stansted Express" platforms- these go into the covered part of the station, under the terminal*. Cross Country services use the bay platform, which is only partly covered- I think this was recently extended to four carriages?

The Upperby curve is also very tight - I believe it has a 10 mph restriction (or is it 5 mph)

It is very tight but is only 10mph anyway, which might explain why the 40 was allowed to traverse it ;).

Wasn't Wigan Wallgate - Southport barred from loco-haulage at one point? I understand Network Rail only allow a certain amount of loco-hauled trains down the line these days. Mostly Network test trains and of course there was the Compass jobby on the 2nd May.

Pretty sure it can but the pantograph has to be tied down to the roof of the locomotive.

So if the ECML is shut north of Northallerton for Engineering Works, no Class 91s can be dragged via Sunderland?

If this is the case, isn't it very short sighted!

its was after they built the metro they were banned i think its something to do with carriage height

A Mk4 is 2.79m from rail to roof and a 156 is 3.8m from rail to roof so it can't be because of the height. I'm fairly sure that 225s are not banned from Sunderland but the pantograph on the 91 has to be tied to the roof of the locomotive.

I have took 158 and 170 in Platform 1&3 but only if the unit is a double due to Signal sighting. We shut the engines down on arrival. No Voyagers because of platform length.

mk4's are banned from sunderland because they are out of gauge after the metro was introduced. Nothing to do with height.

Okay now that two different people have said it I'm definitely starting to think I could be barking up the wrong tree by suggesting 225s are cleared to Sunderland. However I wonder what it is that makes Mk4's out of gauge as they have almost identical dimensions to 156s?

Was wondering this myself

Surely electrics can't go there anyway as don't the NR trains and Metro share the same platforms and therefore electrified at a voltage for the Metro rather than NR electrics?

I think you will find that we were talking about 225 sets being dragged via Sunderland & not under their own power, which would be impossible due to different Voltage!
