tomorrow morning I'm going to a family event in Chorley, then travelling by road to Warrington. Will a Leeds-Preston return be valid via Warrington?
I agree that a Leeds - Preston route Any Permitted ticket is Permitted via Chorley by map combination WY+GM+NW.
I agree that a Leeds - Preston route Any Permitted ticket is Permitted via Warrington Group by map combination TP+NC.
Is it your intention to end your outward leg at Chorley and to start your return leg at a station in Warrington Group?

Eagle, note the word "includes" in the text of the trainscanbecheaper page. It does not claim to show all Permitted Routes in the text description, so we can't use it to eliminate a potential route without an exhaustive check of the map combinations.
If you are able to use trains which call at Stalybridge in each direction, and you are returning the same day, then a £13.70 Off-Peak Day Return Leeds - Stalybridge and a £10 GMPTE Wayfarer: rail (see map for area of validity) would give better value than a £28.10 Leeds - Preston route Any Permitted Off-Peak Return.Yes, not actually travelling through to preston.
No. The Routing Point (RP) Identifier tells us that the RPs for Ormskirk are Liverpool Group, Preston and Wigan Group. To find out which RP(s) are appropriate for a Leeds - Orsmkirk route Any Permitted journey, the Routeing Guide Instructions tell us (Step 4) to compare Anytime Day Single (SDS) route Any Permitted fares:would a ticket to Ormskirk be valid?
Presumably it's legitimate on
Leeds-Bradford-Burnley-Preston, change, Orsmkirk
and Leeds-Huddersfield-Piccadilly-Warrington-Liverpool, change, Ormskirk?
