tomorrow morning I'm going to a family event in Chorley, then travelling by road to Warrington. Will a Leeds-Preston return be valid via Warrington?

If you are able to use trains which call at Stalybridge in each direction, and you are returning the same day, then a £13.70 Off-Peak Day Return Leeds - Stalybridge and a £10 GMPTE Wayfarer: rail (see map for area of validity) would give better value than a £28.10 Leeds - Preston route Any Permitted Off-Peak Return.

Presumably it's legitimate on

Leeds-Bradford-Burnley-Preston, change, Orsmkirk

and

Leeds-Huddersfield-Piccadilly-Warrington-Liverpool, change, Ormskirk

?

with a railcard that's £17.10 Off Peak Day Return (CDR)

No. The Routing Point (RP) Identifier tells us that the RPs for Ormskirk are Liverpool Group, Preston and Wigan Group. To find out which RP(s) are appropriate for a Leeds - Orsmkirk route Any Permitted journey, the Routeing Guide Instructions tell us (Step 4) to compare Anytime Day Single (SDS) route Any Permitted fares:

• Leeds - Ormskirk SDS £28.60
• Leeds - Liverpool Stns (all) SDS £29.20
• Leeds - Preston Lancs SDS £25.40
• Leeds - Wigan Stns (both) SDS £30.30
