Though if you don't want long trains on P5 you'd have to recast the timetable so there's no Leeds - Skipton trains which then go to Bradford.

Of course! I'd forgotten about the interworking on those lines, even though it goes way back to before electrification.

Shipley P5 already has some of the old platform extending beyond the bit currently in use, if you move the current signals i dont think you'd be far off 6 car length.
I think it'd be operational suicide to have a non-regular fleet on the airedale and wharfedale lines. Ideally we should be working to a situation where the Harrogate loop and York via Garforth also share the same EMU pool as these lines.

I think you are being a little overoptimistic. Borders Rail is costing £300m for 30 miles, construction started in 2012, and it's not electrified.

You are uninformed and not comparing like with like. Borders Rail is 31 route miles and 41 single track miles fully signalled with 10 platform faces and 7 sets of 60mph points and cost £280m.

Harrogate-Ripon was costed in 2006 at £36m for 9 single track miles, one platform, signalling at former Dragon Junction only using one 60mph turnout operated as one engine in steam. If planned and installed simultaneously with Harrogate-York resignalling in 2020, the junction cost could be as low as £8m.

No bridges need raising for electrification clearance and if installed during reinstatement should cost no more £500k per mile. Overheads would be fed from Harrogate loop electrification with one section cabin at Dragon Junction.

Yes at 2015 costs we are probably looking at £60m but construction of only 9 miles would only take 15 months. Tracklaying would be less than a fortnight.

The July 2015 issue of "The Rail Engineer" has an excellent article with good pictures on the works at the new stations of Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge, on pages 34 to 38 inclusive.

Thanks for the details, Paul; an interesting article, which also has details of the rationale and progress on the new Low Moor station, too.

Any news on when the timetables are going to be published for Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge?

Well, given that Kirkstall Forge is rumoured to be given the code KLF, I expect the last train to be going to Trancentral, leaving at 3am (but taking an eternity to get there, unless there's help from a Timelord...)...

I'll get my coat...

It's Grim up North, that's for sure! :)

MARK

p.s. the last train to Transcentral will actually be a bus due to engineering work!

No news yet on the expected timetabling of either station, but as a now daily commuter through both there has been some movement on the builds.

At Kirkstall the first signs of the footbridge / lift shaft(?) are rising up at the eastern end of each platform, and at Apperley a shelter has appeared on the Shipley bound platform. Both seem to have the platforms more or less in place, although both seem to still need quite a bit of work but that might not necessarily mean a long time to go. If I get chance at some point I'll grab some picks and link them, but my usual services are the packed peaks and it's not always easy to grab a shot between fellow commuters rattling through at 90mph

Metro have just announced tlc travel will be running a local rail link bus service to apperly bridge station from the local communities. No further info but at least they are planning something as it's quite a walk from most homes in the area

Wonder if it'll be linked to their 947 service between Forster Square and Yeadon Westfield as that uses Harrogate Rd past the site of the station. Extend the operating hours and have it serve Yeadon Village, maybe add a few short runs around the Rawdon/Yeadon area at peak times and bob's your uncle.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but some drivers always give a little pap of the horn at the new stations and presumably wave to the construction workers

Passing Kirkstall this afternoon noticed that the footbridge/lift shaft towers seem to be almost complete, albeit without any sign of steps/bridge. Quite a number of workmen still there at 6pm on a Saturday

Passing the site today the stairway sections appear to have been delivered and were laid near the tower on the up side. There was also a biggish long reach crane parked nearby

Some of the Bradford FS bound services have been slowing approaching both Kirkstall and Apperley, whereas the Skiptons have rattled through at full speed. Northern testing out possible timings for the future service maybe?

Has anyone found a good spot for viewing progress of Kirkstall Forge. The whole site and valley at that point seems to be tree lined. I've tried the site entrance (all properly gated off like it should be) and also from Bramley Falls Park. I assume the canal towpath is separated by woods.

Yeah, the towpath is pretty much separated by trees along the entire length. There might be a small gap towards the south-east of the site where the path curves in towards the line, although if memory serves me right this is still below the height of the line so what you would see even from there I cannot say.

**Update**

Having looked carefully the last couple of days, I've noticed that the section of towpath in question is actually above the trackbed level, so it may be possible to get a reasonable view from there. In the meantime, a poster on another forum has provided a recent view of the new footbridge that is now in situ:

In additional to this, a nosy on OTT recently seemed to suggest that as thought, Apperley Bridge will be served by hourly Bradford FS services, and Kirkstall by hourly Ilkley ones.

Was on the 17:35 LDS-BDQ tonight and it slowed almost to a stop at both stations. Actually threw a few passengers who thought it had passed through Shipley without stopping! Also, I noticed that the CIS screens were in place along with with speakers on the westbound platform. Even though both stations look like a bit of work is still required, it can't be too long to go if these facilities are going in.

I'm especially looking forward to Apperley Bridge opening as it's a nice walk home to Baildon along the canal from there! :D

It really is a shame that both stations won't have all electric trains stop there. In particular, travelling from one to the other will be silly.

One could argue that anyone travelling from one to the other is silly... That said, a fare for such a journey will need to be published, and as this will require either a change at Leeds or a change at both Shipley and Guiseley (in either direction) it will need to be priced sensibly to avoid fraudulent use.

Serving the two separately does at least lessen the impact on existing passengers from further up the Aire/Wharfe valleys. The thing that surprises me is that only 50% of Ilkley and Bradford trains will call initially. Surely if one can call, the other could too...?

Both timetables were tweaked at the last change to allow all services more time between Leeds and Bradford / Ilkley, meaning at the moment they can often be a few minutes early. For example recently services from Leeds towards Bradford have been holding for some minutes at Shipley to get back to the schedule. So it seems that the possibility of all these services stopping instead of just the hourly ones currently committed to has been planned for. I can only imagine that Northern / Metro want to test the waters first and see just how much demand there really is.

This may be either a) incorrect, or b) already known as true, but I offer this info with a source anyway to be sure....

Apperley Bridge could have the three letter code APY according to -- http://uktra.in/station/APY

Does anyone know the exact date that this station will open, and if there is going to be any kind of ceremony? I'd like to go and film it on its first day if possible...

Nothing has been announced yet. Within the next three months is most likely. Apperley Bridge is likely to beat it

Apperley Bridge should be open this month. Kirkstall Forge has been delayed but should be before the end of 2015. Part of the delay is due to the access road being delayed through land purchase taking longer than anticipated. Check wymetro website for updates.
