Trial operations day at the station today, with a load of us volunteering as guinea pigs to test out queuing systems in the new ticket office and passenger transfer times from Western concourse to platforms via the new footbridge.
If anyone was at KGX this morning and heard "would customers in the western concourse awaiting the 1231 to Hogwarts please make their way to platform 1 where the train is ready to board", it was all for trial operations!

Did you get any freebies for doing this? When I did the St Pancras testing I got a return ticket on Eurostar. So did you get an open return to Hogwarts?!

Just 50% off any East Coast rail journey for two people. Not as good as a return Eurostar trip! But useful for a trip to the Highlands I have planned in April.

The main route is on the ground floor, your post could lead people to wrongly believe that the footbridge is the only route...
Really? only if they were taking that post as their sole source of information about it. There's all sorts of reasons why they wouldn't test the ground floor access route whilst the station is operational- not least the position of the barriers and gates for the current arrangement. That doesn't mean the footbridge route can't or shouldn't be tested. You might as well say that that post could lead people to think that there really are trains to Hogwarts...

I agree with all that, but nevertheless, taken across a number of forums and newsgroups, a good few people have previously made the mistake that the footbridge is to be the only route TO the platforms. I've pointed it out in a few previous discussions here, but it has often been repeated a few months later...
Surely if one doesn't use the bridge one has to walk the length of what is now platform 8 to where the present concourse is, then back along whichever platform one requires? Where as the bridge takes you straight to the middle of whatever platform.

Given the entrance barriers are at the southern end of the new concourse, no, as this helpful diagram on the East Coast website shows...

No, the lower level ticket barriers will not be directly under the upper ones on the entrance to the footbridge. They are to be about where the marks and spencers used to be at the end of platform 8 so you wont have to walk the length of it.
Aren't the Thameslink platforms 'numbered' A and B?

They are, but they're at St Pancras, not Kings Cross.
The artist impression photos around the station show(ed) it as platform Y too.

The previous version (otherwise known as York Road Platform). However, that was separate from the main station.

It was definitely the original idea, it was in all NR's enhancement plans as platform Y until changed to 0 as recently as March 2010. Possibly based on the route into it being similar to that of the old York Road platform and curve?
Also, the Y would have fitted in with the fact it was built in the space which was formerly the York Rd taxi rank.
(The road is now renamed as York Way of course, instantly making it more upmarket.)

Anyone know what the scanner gizmos are that have appeared on the barrier gates at KGX. They look to be optical scanners, so I'm assuming they read the QR from print@home tickets?

Barriers at other EC-served stations have such scanners, so I guess that they've only now just fitted them to the ones at King's Cross.
At Kings Cross this morning there was an information stand about the new entrance, so I asked this question.
The answer from the Network Rail Communication Executive that I ended up speaking to was -
The entrance from York Way would not have any barriers, and anyone who wanted access, whether they were unable to walk around to the new entrance, had a lot of luggage, or merely their train was due to leave soon, could use the York Road entrance.
However the reason why I ended up speaking to the Network Rail Communication Executive was that the staff on the stand initially denied that the entrance existed, and when they finally admitted that it did, claimed that it could only be used by people who were visibly disabled.
So it will be interesting on the 19th...

By barriers did they mean ticket barriers, if so why would it, anyone using the York Way entrance would still have to pass through ticket barriers. Where on the station was this stand, how could they deny something existed that was staring them in the face??

Although strangely the map shows it as an exit from the 'arrivals concourse'. Are they actually going to (try to) prevent people walking into the 'arrivals concourse'?
