No issue with the king but would prefer if he paid his own way out of his own vast resource. Normal working people should not have to subsidise them.

There's a problem with a 5 May Bank Holiday because of counting of results of local elections being held the previous day.

I also wonder if history will repeat itself and we’ll be reinvaded by France in the name of Europe too.

Since I retired I am not much bothered about what days are bank holidays. However the tourism and entertainment industries need certainty about dates at least 15 months ahead. Dates shouldn't be changed at short notice.

In Spain there are some religious ‘bank holidays’ on unalterable days. If that happens to be a Thursday they get, without question, the Friday off as well as it is ‘un puente’ - a bridge - to the weekend.

Same in Poland too. The 1st of November is a holiday for All Saints, so de facto, everyone is off work on the 31st. I always love working on those long weekends, because no-one is ever in the office (or now, online) and I can essentially drink coffee for 8 hours while pretending to work.

Only those bridge days aren't extra, they usually come out of your holiday allowance.

Its not everyday you coronate a king.

if we are becoming so republican about it, why are we pretending.. just be done with Monarchy.
If not, then celebrate it.

But middle of the road pandering leads us no where.

i’m firmly of belief there should be a day off, its not just about miserable adults putting their grievances off on any one better off themselves for whatever agenda they support..

its also a huge event for kids…. adults should be less selfish. Encouraging community events and memories for kids to remeber is important unless we just seek a miserable middle of the road future for our children on just about everything.

That weekend won't make much difference to me. Friday or Monday are my rest days. If we're able to request a specific day, then I would've asked for the Tuesday.

Yes I think they learned the lesson regarding moving the May Day BH to VE day in 2020 for the 75th anniversary, as many plans were scuppered by that (although of course in the end covid stopped everything happening).

Couldnt the coronation have been done on the Monday, take the Tuesday as an extra holiday ?

Although in the case of Christmas this year, the "extra" bank holiday is ending up on Tuesday as Monday is Boxing Day, but let's just scrap the extra day off and send everybody down the pit shall we?

No doubt the same people who are complaining about the extra bank holiday would complain if one of the other bank holidays were moved, or if there wasn't an extra bank holdiay for the coronation.

After all the T.U.C. and the union movement were complaining about how few bank holidays we have in relation to our neighbours in Europe, so they ought to be pleased about the extra holiday next year.

It is rather like the situation in France, where there is strict separation between church and state, and yet several public holidays (eg. August 15th - Feast of the Assumption) are religious in origin. And yet woe betide any French government who tries to alter the public holiday entitlement of French workers.

Given the Saturday was picked for the Coronation I was not expecting an additional bank holiday.

There will be pressure on holiday accommodation plus even more travel than usual on the afternoon of Friday 28th April and Saturday 29th April then the return Monday 8th May given the opportunity for 8 / 9 clear days on holiday with only four taken from the annual allowance.
Business are likely to struggle with staffing.

Regarding local elections particularly in marginal seats could the results be swayed by a change in the demographic of those who vote?

Well, he knows what he can do with that. They spend millions on the whole palaver, justifying it on the grounds of dignity and tradition, and then introduce something that sounds like part of a 1970s game show for teenagers, “And now you at home can join in the fun.” I will not be watching…and not just because I haven’t got a TV.

As one who can (just) remember the 1953 coronation day and what a momentous event that was, and with a great respect for Queen Elizabeth until her last years I should be looking forward to this Saturday. But I just cannot get excited at all. King Charles is a completely different kettle of fish and has already intruded far too much into political matters that his mother was strictly neutral about. This latest 'allegiance to the King' stuff is the last straw and something that I simply cannot do.

On the day of Diana's funeral I went for a long long walk to get away from it. Not sure where I will be able to walk on Saturday to do the same. Very sad what has come to this country.
