Kilcreggan?

Hi, I'm thinking of taking some friends on a trip from Edinburgh to the Clyde coast. I want to do a round trip to Helensburgh and then travel on the ferry to Gourock via Kilgeggan on the Cowal Peninsula. Returning from Gourock via Paisley, or vice-versa.

Are rail tickets interchangeable between Helensburgh/Gouock?

If not I was thinking of just getting returns for Edinburgh - Glasgow and then overdistance excessing one way to Helensburgh & back from Gourock as required.

Is it acceptable to overdistance excess to one destination and also to overdistance excess from a different return station on the same original ticket?

Rail tickets are not interchangeable between Gourock and Helensburgh. You could do the excessing thing, but in my experience you'll find people in Glasgow are reluctant to do that (although if you tell them what you're looking for they will excess it eventually!). And your ferry fare is separate from your rail fare.

Have you looked at the Daytripper ticket? You can buy a return to Glasgow, and add this ticket on when you get there. It allows you unlimited travel on trains, buses, SPT ferries and the subway. It's good value and much simpler than any of the other options!

I agree, buy a return from Edinburgh to the SPT boundary
Make sure the train calls at Croy, Shotts, or Motherwell, depending on which route you use

You can purchase your SPT daytripper in advance (at least 4 business days to allow for postage)

The Kilcreggan Ferry is fairly dull. May I suggest a more expensive option.

Train to Gourock, ferry to Dunoon, bus to Rothesay (Isle of Bute), ferry to Wemyss Bay, train back to Glasgow.

From Edinburgh you would have to buy a ticket to Croy, and then use this ticket.

A much more interesting route, certainly! Just watch, though, because the bus link between Dunoon and Rothesay is rather infrequent to say the least! I think about 3 run a day, so it's fairly tight.

If you're going in the Summer, you could also do a trip on The Waverley which is pretty different. It leaves from Helensburgh usually on Saturdays, and some other rail-linked places (eg, Wemyss Bay, Greenock, Largs...) throughout the week.

the daytripper is good value , ive used it to get the spt lines that im missing . You can use it on most buses though watch out mcgills dont take it . Next time im gonna do the kilgreggan ferry , it seems a nice ferry trip.
