I'd have liked to have been a musician, I was a good amateur singer and performed in concerts in London in the 1980s, did things with the BBC, and so on.
But I realised that, tolerably good that I was, I wasn't good enough, and those that were better than me had to work hard to sustain it as a career.
On the other hand, having initially thought that being an MP would be a good idea, they aren't paid anywhere near enough to recompense the amount of work they have to do (if they are doing the job properly, that is) and they probably need an ulterior motive (king of the world) in order to take up the job in the first place. Having thought about this one a little, there's no way I'd want the job.
I mean, at the time music was more of a passion for me, whereas IT was an interest, but in the end I knew that I wasn't good enough to make a career out of the former whereas I was able to make a career out of IT. That could translate into only needing to be averagely competent to make a career out of IT whereas you need to be something more exceptional to make a career out of music, I think that's probably true and had enough self awareness to know that I wasn't the latter.
