Some incredible photos from Coventry and Heathrow there, I have to say I didn't realise such a spotting package was available. I am very intrigued, was it worth paying for in terms of value for money?

Most definitely yes. DM me if you want more details - might be this evening before I can reply as I'll be shutting down in a few minutes.

If you're thinking of doing the same, you'll ideally want to aim at May, June or July to maximise daylight hours and also avoid having the sun interfere with photos as the rooms are south facing. Take a laptop with you so you can have Flight Radar 24 running so you can prepare for your best photo targets.

No worries about any delay, I am at work anyway (replying during some down-time between one bit and the next!) so I've only just seen your reply. Definitely sounds like fun, whenever you get the chance I'd love to get more details!

We had one of those "experience vouchers" given to us at Christmas 2021 and after a lot of faffing around we eventually managed to book to use it. Believe me, these experience vouchers are just too much hassle... limited date availability, limited venue availability... we literally ended up with just the one available weekend for our selected railway, the East Lancashire, and once I'd booked that and turned to finding a hotel... well... that's when I discovered that some cretin had arranged for there to be four separate massive music concerts in Manchester on the same day. The result was that every hotel room in Manchester and the surrounding area was booked up unless we wanted to pay a four figure sum per night. We ended up in the Premier Inn at Wigan as being the nearest available - and even then it was still over £100 a night...!!!

Anyway...

We set off from Epsom on 377 203 + 477 453 to Victoria and transited to Euston with 11009 + 11010 and had 390 127 for our trip northwards. On the way I was able to see quite a few locomotives. At Willesden / Wembley were 66 546, 66 432, 59 004 and 92 043 while 57 307 and 86 259 could be found at Rugby.

Wolverhampton provided a splash of colour with 390 119 going the other way and at Stafford there was a railtour topped and tailed with 47 270 and 31 128. Crewe held 37 421 + 37 612, 67 011 and 08 780 while 730 010 was on test. Passing through Warrington enabled me to note 66 118, 66 040 and 66 619 and just prior to arrival at Wigan I caught sight of 66 778 at Springs Branch.

Incidentally, near Acton Bridge I managed to photograph an Easyjet ( G-EZBJ ) that had presumably just departed from Speke.

Having checked in at the hotel, which was only a few minutes walk away from both stations my wife was keen to get a bit more track marked off in her atlas and also to visit somewhere she hadn't been so the logical thing to do was to head to Southport. This allowed me to photograph 769 450, 769 456 and 769 458 at Wallgate while waiting to board 150 120 for the coast.

Following a look round town, including the mandatory walk along the pier, we returned on 150 107; I photographed 507 001 and 507 010 in the sidings on our way out of the station and upon checking RTT while en route I realised we could do a quick out and back to Kirkby as well, but we would have to be quick... we were looking at a +3 at Wallgate so it would depend on being able to buy on board! A quick word with the guard on 150 150 + 150 148 when it drew in ensured that this was possible - and this was also the last train of the day to Kirkby, so that was a good track scratch!

Looks like it was an enjoyable time in Southport there, a town I have yet to properly explore. It's on my list to do, both on a cycle and on foot, but probably not until the spring now!

Steam train day!

We started from Wallgate on board 769 450 to Manchester Piccadilly, where I snapped 150 123, and we then proceeded by tram to Bury. I am not going to clutter these reports up with all the tram details, though... that would tend to swamp everything else. I did see and ride on a few of the new batch on this day and the next, which is worth this mention!

Upon arrival at the East Lancashire Railway at Bury we worked out from the timetable that we could do the diesel diagram to Rawtenstall and back to Bury to fill in what would have otherwise been dead time until the steam service arrived, so that's what we did with 45 108, then switching to steam behind 34092 to head straight back up to Rawtenstall again before doing the full length of the line to Heywood and back up to Bury, after which we visited the transport museum before heading back on the tram to Manchester.

For our return leg, we went from Manchester Victoria ( this mean more new track for the wife ) and we had the numerically coincident 150 125 + 156 425 as haulkage. I also had the opportunity to note two pairs of new units, specifically 195 005 + 195 022 and 195 025 + 195 010.

Does anyone know which of the ELR's two class 14s that is in my picture, with 09 024?

Back to Manchester we went, with the intention of completing the tram track for my wife - not a lot else to do on a Sunday anyway...

This time, 156 425 + 156 428 did the honours and when we got to Manchester Victoria I noted 66 559 + 66 798, but we stayed on the train to Rochdale to save a bit of time on the tram track. My wife doesn't do Quail level, so it's not essential that we do the route both ways for her to mark it. During all this bashing around on the trams, I snapped 769 424 and 769 458 at Newton Heath.

Again to save a bit of time we did a fast hop back from Manchester Airport to Piccadilly on board 195 110 ( which as it happens was required for haulage ha ha ) before polishing off the rest of the tram track. At this stage I took a picture of 158 889 at Pomona and after our track collecting had been concluded we returned from Deansgate to Wigan via Salford Crescent; this allowed pictures of 195 104, 195 117, 66 776, 331 008, 397 004 and 397 001.

Our return haulages were 331 012 + 331 008 from Deansgate and 156 429 + 150 130 from Salford Crescent.

Weekend over, we had to head back south. For the second time on this trip, this time at Wigan North Western, 390 119 was going the other way and 70 816 also put in an appearance before our own train turned up formed of 390 122. 60 019 and 66 118 were lurking at Warrington and 92 032, 92 028, 08 831 and 66 730 were at Crewe.

Further south, I could only get 59 002 and 66 547 at Willesden / Wembley as some clot had parked a container train in front of everything else and after burrowing in 51649 + 51650 we had consecutive pair 455 852 + 455 853 home to Epsom from Waterloo.

The power station in my photos below from this return leg of the trip is Fiddler's Ferry.

A week on, and another steam train mission!

Off from Epsom with 377 305 + 377 327 + 377 306 to Victoria then 11083 + 11084 to burrow under to King's Cross where 801 203 ( yes... after all that trouble tracking it down - see 4th May - it just turns up on something we're getting anyway... always the way isn't it?! ) took us swiftly out to Peterborough. Before getting to the Nene Valley station, I grabbed a quick picture of 170 623.

On the Nene Valley, the rostered locomotive was 34081, which was required, and we did the full trip along the line to Yarwell Junction and back with the prolonged stop at Wansford included, and afterwards we made use of the path alongside the line to get some pictures of the next departure - and also a quick grab of 56 091. After that we had a look round the cathedral before heading back to the station.

Returning home we had 801 101 + 801 107 from Peterborough, 11085 + 11086 for the mole mode and 377 611 + 377 622 from Victoria to Epsom; the only item of interest on the way home was 66 729 at Clapham Junction.

This time it was a mixed trip... two very different aspects to the mission.

To start with, there was a haulage hunt so 377 624 + 377 608 from Epsom to Sutton then 700 004 to Farringdon then downstairs to see if the new line was any faster for getting to Liverpool Street than the Circle. short answer is - it isn't for such a short sector, because of the length of time it takes to actually get downstairs... Nevertheless, 345 017 took me to Liverpool Street where I resurfaced and caught the first available, dud 720 564, to Stratford.

Before long I had required 345 067 turn up to take me back to Liverpool Street and I bounced straight back out again on double dud 720 536 + 720 559. As so often happens, a required unit went past on the way to Stratford, so as soon as I got there it was a quick snap of 66 534 then immediately on dud 720 569 straight back to Liverpool Street again.

The interception was made and required 720 528 + 720 568, the latter dud, was my move back out again. This time the same thing happened, so as soon as I got to Stratford I was immediately onto 745 010 to pursue another set back to London. Once again, interception was spot on and required 720 575 + 720 543 ( dud ) conveyed me back to Stratford.... missing a required pair by seconds... so for the third time it was a case of bash the next thing back up, regardless of how dud it was... and it turned out to be very dud 321 319 + 321 318 + 321 324.

Yet again, the interception went well and the required pair, 720 520 + 720 526 provided me with another trip out to Stratford. This time it was clear that there was nothing else to be had apart from a sighting of 66 512 so after a while dud pair 720 548 + 720 535 brought me back to Liverpool Street whereupon, seeing that there was sufficient time available, I thought I would nip down to Eastleigh to photograph whatever was in the yard today.

This meant 92309 + 92226 + 92166 + 92045 to Bank and 65501 + 65502 to Waterloo... get a ticket... find there's a queue a million people long and only about five windows open... just manage to catch 444 029 + 444 042 on a fast to Winchester, sighting 66 554 at Basingstoke and 66 789 at Micheldever on the way. While waiting for the stopper to come out from the siding, I did pictures of 444 023, 66 133 and 701 045 ( yes... they do move... ) before boarding 450 111 to Eastleigh.

Eastleigh was productive. The list of photos taken was long: 08 511, 08 683, 66 850, 66 846, 70 813, 69 001, 66 756, 66 745 and 66 765 with 66 092 also sighted but not snapped. With that lot in the can, I caught 444 002 direct back to Waterloo, getting a bonus picture at Woking of 66 784, and ending the day with 455 721 + 455 725 from Waterloo to Epsom.

A visit with the wife to Canterbury to explore the town and surrounding area, so not a lot of railway detail I'm afraid...

From Epsom with 377 607, Sutton with 700 004 again, which terminated at Blackfriars and 700 038 forwards to St Pancras for 395 021 for a fast blast down to Kent. Followed by several hours trudging around, before getting pictures of 377 514 and 395 017 at Canterbury West ahead of catching 395 020 back to St Pancras and then... lo and behold... 700 038 to Sutton and 377 616 from there to Epsom.

Another few days away with the wife started on this date, this time to Cardiff with the intention of getting her all the track in that she required on the Valley Lines as well as visiting a few places in the process. This was somewhat complicated by engineering work between Cardiff Central on Pontypridd all week, except for the day we were to go home - so we were very dependent on that work finishing on time... There was another case of us playing the engineering works - there were diversions via Gloucester all week, and my wife needed the track from there to Severn Tunnel Junction, so this was a good way of getting that in without having to make a special trip...

We started with 455 739 + 455 865 from Epsom to Wimbledon, where 701 037 was lurking in the depot, and proceeded to Paddington on 21385 + 21386. It would be 800 307 which was to take us west. On the way we passed a doubleheaded pair of sheds at Iver, although I could only identify 66 171 as being one of them, I grabbed a photo of 387 306 at Reading - it was due to be moved from there later that day, and indeed we passed 37 601 at Goring and Streatley which was heading to Reading to carry out that removal.

Didcot had 66 554 present while 66 620 was seen at Bourton and 60 007 at Stonehouse. A consecutively numbered pair of Cross Country units, 170 111 + 170 112, were in the opposite platform at Gloucester, 70 815 put in an appearance at Severn Tunnel Junction while 66 164 and 66 106 were resting at Alexandra Dock Junction.

On arrival at Cardiff, we had a bit of time to kill before we could check in at the hotel ( the Clayton, with a commanding view of the eastern throat at Central ) so we dashed to Bridgend with 153 333 + 153 968 in order to make use of "dead time" to get my wife the track on the Vale of Glamorgan line; consecutive pair 150 258 + 150 259 turned up to allow us to do this and while en route I grabbed a picture of an executive jet at Rhoose - unfortunately unidentified... no registration visible. Cadoxton was host to 66 529 on this trip.

After checking in at the hotel, we quickly returned to Cardiff Central, sighting 66 716, in order to visit Ebbw Vale; the wife needed the track... we had time to do that and have a look round... so we headed there on 170 206 and as it turned out our return later was the same unit on the next cycle of the diagram! A further locomotive had berthed at Alexandra Dock Junction by this time, 66 113, so that fell to my camera on the way out. Later that evening a bit of nocturnal photography of 170 203, 67 014, 66 103, an unidentified 60 and an unidentified 170 from the hotel room finished the day. In picture JUL 2022 053 below, look carefully - you can just see two 153s crossing the bridge north of the station at Grangetown...

For today, we decided to quickly get the short Penarth branch out of the way, so after starting off by seeing 769 008, 66 119, 153 312 and 175 007 at Cardiff Central we boarded 153 369 + 153 327 for the short return trip, grabbing a picture of 153 922 at Canton, and 66 734 when back at Central. I also snapped 800 008 and after that we had 175 009 to take us to Maesteg - sighting 231 008 at Canton on the way - where we had a good look round including finding an expansive view in the hills above the town.

We returned on 170 203, getting a picture of 08 499 at Canton and then one of 170 620 at central before we proceeded to board 150 278 to Barry Island. This time I noted 231 002 plus one other at Canton and after a good look round the beach at Barry Island we returned on 150 229. Again, not a lot of railway notes but at least my wife was able to mark off three lines in her atlas.

Today, we targeted the main valleys with the intention of leaving just the short bit to Pontypridd remaining in the hope thet the works would finish on schedule overnight. This meant a bus substitution from Cardiff Central to Pontypridd and our plan was to clear the track north of there then on the way back get off the bus at Radyr and walk back from there following the River Taff.

Once we had reached Pontypridd, we simply got the first available which was 150 230 to Merthyr Tydfil, straight back again, same unit was then the next available to Aberdare, straight there, straight back again, then a different unit - 150 231 - after a short wait for Treherbert; again straight there and straight back again, then the bus to Radyr and the planned walk.

That evening's pictorial activity from the hotel room consisted of 175 009, 800 021, 66 103 and 175 109.

The engineering works had finished on time, so we could complete my wife's Valley Lines track bashing as planned. *phew*

Before leaving the hotel I did a few further photos from the room, consisting of 175 107, 150 230, 769 003, 800 035 and 150 282 then once we had made our way to the station and boarded 150 253; this took us to Pontypridd via the Queen Street side of the loop and it terminated in the bay, forming the next available back to Central. Our next move was 153 362 to Coryton, then staying on board for the western side of the loop to Radyr and then back again to Central, thus completing all the required track.

While on this unit I got a picture of 800 028 just outside Central and 769 003, 769 006, 231 004 and 231 006 while passing Canton the first time and then 67 015 at Canton on the second pass. Having done all that, our next train was 800 021 + 800 018 back to London, again via Gloucester. There was some interest on the way in the shape of 66 509 at Wentloog and 60 019 at Newport plus the less common sight of 47 727 hauling 360 115 through Reading which we caught up with again at Maidenhead.

Some locomotives were present for the final run in to Paddington with 59 002 at Southall while 66 053, 66 538 and 66 112 were at Acton Yard. After transferring to Wimbledon on board 21443 + 21444 I saw that the depot now held 701 028. Finally, we had 455 901 + 455 859 back home to Epsom.

Back to chasing haulages now... 377 624 + 377 612 from Epsom, 700 006 from Sutton and required 345 041 from Farrington to Paddington ( thanks to some timely gen ) before bouncing back to Liverpool Street on 345 039 dropped me on required 720 524, which was about to leave.

once at Stratford I got a picture of 47 727 hauling 701 030 to Ilford for attention and then did some pictures of various 66s before dud 720 542 + 720 523 ( required ) arrived with a train to Liverpool Street; aiming to get straight back out as quickly as possible I found the next departure was 321 902 + 321 325 but after a while back at Stratford, nothing else required turned up so I took double dud 720 539 + 720 569 back in to try the other side, facilitated by 745 101 to Tottenham Hale.

While there I got pictures of 317 343 + 317 508 and then 66 790 - and rather annoyingly, a required 720 went the other way! A quick check showed that I could intercept it easily at Cheshunt, which I reached by catching those same two 317s on their way back out. Before long, the required 720 514 duly turned up and I rode it all the way to Stratford to see what was lurking in the sidings. Same unit back out to Tottenham Hale as nothing required was in the sidings so there wasn't any point watching for the peak starters.

This meant I might as well get on with the shopping I was planning to do on the way home, so dud 720 571 to Liverpool Street, 21045 + 21046 to Farringdon, 700 043 to Streatham... get the shopping done... 700 016 to Sutton and 377 301 + 377 320 back to Epsom. Hmm... a six car short form in the evening peak is a bit cosy...

We planned to visit Clacton on this occasion, partly for a day out by the sea but also partly because my wife needed the track east of Colchester.

Our start from Epsom was on board 377 704 to London Bridge, then 700 119 to Farringdon and 21043 + 21044 across to Liverpool Street. Our train out was double dud 720 528 + 720 573 and there was nothing of note seen on the way.

However, we failed to scratch the final three miles of track for her. This thread tells the story, so I won't bother to repeat all the details separately:

After the event, having been taken back to Thorpe le Soken on board the rear half of the train which was still on the rails and undamaged, 720 573, we changed to 720 526 to Colchester via Colchester Town just to make sure she had all the track there as well. After grabbing a meal in Colchester we set off back to London on 321 310 + 321 330; the only note I made on the way back was of 08 588 + 08 700 at Ilford. We had 21559 + 21560 from Liverpool Street to Farringdon, 700 008 from there to Sutton and 377 619 + 377 618 back to Epsom.

The only picture I took on this day with my camera was this one at Blackfriars on the way back!

The following week we continued our canal walk and started with 455 912 + 455 908 from Epsom to Wimbledon, connecting to Paddington on 21403 + 21404. From Paddington we rode 377 162 + 377 151 to Midgham, and on the way I saw the following: 66 171 + 66 013 and 66 025 at Acton, 66 125 at Langley and 66 011 and 66 572 at Theale.

During the course of the walk I got lineside pictures of 802 022 and 387 162 and from Theale we had the same pair of units back to Paddington! I did additionally get a picture of 387 148 at Theale. After crossing back to Wimbledon on 21459 + 21460, we ended up on the same pair of 455s that we had started on as well.. weird...

Slightly different today... a visit to the Robert Humm bookshop in Stamford... I set out on 455 865 + 455 713 from Epsom to Waterloo then reached KIng's Cross with the help of 3241 + 3435 and 11045 + 11046 before zooming to Peterborough on 801 215. While waiting for my connection - 170 107 - and also just after boarding it I saw 66 413, 66 716, 66 534, 66 715 and 66 747.

Having done what I needed to do and added a couple of books to my collection, I set off back - and just missed the chance to photograph 66 704 + 66 739 at Stamford before 170 398 turned up to take me to Peterborough; on the run in we were running parallel to 801 105 in the Helpston area, which was quite interesting.

Back at Peterborough, the business comprised 66 760, 156 917 and then my haulage to London in the shape of 800 210. Moving across to farringdon on 21075 + 21076 allowed me to get 700 011 to London Bridge for 377 304 + 377 311 + 377 128 to Epsom. On the way I grabbed a shot of 377 614 and 700 145 while on the flyovers at Selhurst.

July concluded with a trip to Havant from where we walked to the top end of Hayling Island and back, so the railway notes are very limited on this occasion: Epsom to Clapham Junction on 377 626, Clapham Junction to Waterloo on 455 854 + 455 728 then Waterloo to Havant with 450 117 + 450 084. After the walk, we reversed the process with 450 095 + 450 088 to Waterloo and 455 733 + 455 914 to Epsom.

Needless to say, the footpath on the trackbed of the former Hayling Island branch formed a substantial part of our walk...

Realising I hadn't done Yorkshire for a while and that there were still good haulage pickings to be had, this was my next target. Setting off from Epsom on 455 920 + 455 735 I got across from Waterloo with the help of 3246 + 3458 and 11073 + 11074. with 801 205 providing the means of getting to York.

Passing Peterborough produced the surprise of 69 002 + 73 107 while 66 149 was also in the vicinity; Doncaster was busy as usual with a collection consisting of 66 732, 66 501, 68 033, 66 753, 37 219, 56 113, 67 016 and a few others that were hiding behind various wagons and trees. I took a picture of 331 106 in the north bays as we pulled out.

On arrival at York I managed a few pictures before getting required 68 021 out to Malton ( with required TP04 attached ), although the return was dud 68 030 with a dud rake as well. In the interim 68 020 had trundled through on a crew training run following us from York.

Back at York my next move was a Micklefield return, having already noted through RTT that both shuttle units were required; in a remarkable coincidence the first was the last and the second was the first... 195 133 out and 195 001 back. After that, I boarded a delayed dud 802 218 to Leeds, spending the transit time to work out how to get a required 331 in before heading back to London.

The solution was to use dud 331 106 to Sandal and Agbrigg to intercept required 331 109 to Wakefield Westgate then pick up the next available London service. As it turned out, that was heavily delayed due to some ECML disruption and I was actually at Wakefield before the inbound working - so I could have gone back to Leeds if I'd thought about it in time. This did, however, give me the chance to photograph the entire rake at Wakefield - it was 91 110 with ten on...

Once on the way back to London we passed 66 768 at Sandal and I was able to add 66 426, 66 068, 60 076 and 66 722 to the notes for Doncaster followed by 66 739, 66 792, 66 725 and 66 762 at Peterborough. Crossing London with 11051 + 11052 and 3264 + 3455 put me on 455 711 + 455 715 at Waterloo for Epsom.

The sunset in the Chelsea area was taken from on board the 455s back to Epsom - with full zoom, from the opposite side of the train lining up just between people's heads, believe it or not... and yes, I did do the Lincoln Cathedral picture from on the Mk4s at about 120mph...

Today we would complete the Kennet and Avon walk from Pewsey to Reading, but because of engineering work we had to use a bus from Epsom to Worcester Park and start the train part there. This was on 455 741 + 455 857 to Wimbledon and 21423 + 21424 onwards to Paddington, with 387 144 + 387 148 getting us to Theale to continue our walk. Doubleheader 66 107 + 66 087 was in Acton Yard while 66 617 and 66 796 were present at Southall with 66 001 and 37 099 lurking at Reading.

Apart from grabbing a picture of 66 011 and 802 109 at Theale, there was an image obtained of 450 016 in Reading with some swans in the foreground before we made our way to the station via a short stretch of the Thames and boarded 800 004 + 800 010 back to Paddington. We returned to Wimbledon on 21391 + 21392 and then to Worcester Park on 455 854 + 455 709. It was just as well I'd made sure we would be closest to the footbridge at Worcester Park - SWR had seen fit to provide only a small single decker bus for the connection to Epsom ( and onwards to Guildford ) and the vast majority of the other passengers were unable to get on... and no, there weren't multiple buses for each connection either...

Something a bit different this time; my wife had sold her late stepfather's saxophone to a dealer in Worthing, and there was no way we would entrust that to a courier, so we took it to him ourselves. It gave us the excuse to walk along the front at Worthing afterwards, of course.

The first train was 377 702 from Epsom to Victoria, then we had 377 137 + 377 414 for the rest of the way; I was able to grab a picture of blue and grey 313 201 at Hove and a perfectly positioned light aircraft at Shoreham airport, which is right next to the line. We ended up on the same pair of 377s for the way back but we bailed out at East Croydon and positioned ourselves on 377 612 to get to Thornton Heath to do some food shopping, after which we used 377 203 + 377 205 to get to Victoria and boarded 377 446 to return to Epsom.

The aircraft in that last picture below is G-EZDX, snapped from on board the 377s at Gatwick.

Some lovely pictures Peter, it looks like it was such a lovely day as well. Just a quick question about Epsom to London: If you are going to London (doesn't matter about where), is it more convenient to go via Waterloo or Victoria?

Back in haulage hunting mode, I set off from Epsom on board 377 318 + 377 312 + 377 440 to London Bridge with 700 111 onwards to Farringdon and 21001 + 21002 sideways to Liverpool Street. The first available departure to Stratford was dud, 720 563, but I used it anyway as everything else on the stops was also dud and hoped that this time I wouldn't just miss a required one coming back!

I didn't, and neither did I have long to wait for required 720 105 + 720 547 ( dud ) to show up on an inbound, which rather fortunately put me on required 720 106 + 720 570 ( dud ) back out a short while later; before long required 720 501 + 720 543 ( dud ) appeared to convey me back to London again. I had also seen 66 419 and 66 955 in the interim.

By now I had gen on all the other available required units, so I came straight back out on dud 720 515, promptly saw 66 543 and 59 101 then took required 720 108 + 720 524 ( dud ) in again, double dud 720 532 + 720 577 out, saw 66 733, boarded required 720 107 to Meridian Water and back again - noting 37 608 at Temple Mills - before seeing 66 712 and claiming required 720 506 back out to Tottenham Hale.

Knowing that was the lot, I then did dud 720 566 directly to Liverpool Street, 21541 + 21542 to Farringdon and 700 150 to East Croydon followed by 377 704 to Thornton Heath for more shopping, 377 611 from there to London Bridge and the same trio of 377s that I had started the day with finished the day back to Epsom.

I didn't get time to do much in the way of photography on this day with such intensive bashing!
