It's Not Just Trains-Now Stations Are Too Congested

The congestion at Basingstoke has definitely been caused by the new gates. Before these were installed 3 gates were used during evening rush hour to exit the station together with manual inspection of passengers tickets on the fourth gate designed for use for bikes, buggies, luggage etc.

With the new (so called "fast gates") only 2 of them are used for exit from the station and though a third one is equipped so it could be used for this purpose, it is not and when I enquired as to why I was told it didn't work properly. The manual gate is now used in as slow a manner as possible with the ticket inspector opening and closing the gate with a key for each individual passenger - an amazingly slow and hopeless process.

Thus the new "faster" gates have effectively halved the number of people that can exit the station.

Rebuilding the whole front of the station to resolve this problem seems to me to be an amazingly expensive solution to a self generated problem and to which there is a very much cheaper and easier solution.

The station actually opened in the 1970s, I beleive you are referring to the 2001 improvements.

OK, I meant station building and car park (the old building was completely demolished). Two of the platforms and rails are older, one of the platforms is newer.

Liking the looks of the new Peterborough. It needs a revamp. I use the station at least once per month and the project looks promising.

The entire station will be transformed with a smart new frontage outside and a lighter and brighter interior, giving passengers and staff a much- improved travelling and working experience.
Under the plans, the size of the concourse will be increased with easier accessibility to the platforms. Travellers will also be given better access to information and assistance, with new information points being installed.
The plans also include more seating, a new waiting room and refurbished toilets as well as automatic ticket gating to improve security and revenue protection at the station which is a major commuter hub.

The queue to get out of some stations - Cardiff Central comes to mind - can be horrendous at peak time because of the gates.

All because someone did not use their brain to be honest. If the gates were installed in a largish U arrangement , it would work a lot better.

Cardiff like many places its simply down to trying to install gates without rebuilding/renovating the concourse to improve the flows.

They sort of did that with Leeds - instead of installing them where the manual barriers were, they brought the automatic gates out towards the bay platforms, and a lot of the time the flow through there is smooth, they must have got a good few more barriers than they would have done without moving them.

Coventry is quite lucky in that it has a quite expansive station building, and there is a bit of room on p2-4 at the London eneds to develop.

I'm normally fairly easy going on this forum when it comes to risque humor but to me this is to far. I would suggest you go away and read about what happened to Coventry during the Second World War, perhaps starting here and then consider whether or not that joke was actually in good taste.

This RUS has a somewhat different remit to the earlier DfT 'stations report' of 2009, in which Kirkgate was definitely mentioned...

No not really congested it's just literally on the verge of collapse which would explain why it isn't in this RUS.

I think you're choosing to be offended, rather than actually finding it offensive.

Except when people are trying to get between 1-6 and 8 when they're a pain in the neck. I suggest they'd have been better curved in the other direction.
