Yeah I know. But sitting at the front of a 755 you get to hear the amazing sounding traction motors (I don't know what in the motors I'm actually hearing though)

With modern AC traction inverter drives, I think most of the power electronics and motor (not transmission) noise you hear is caused by magnetostriction vibration effects in the motor, due to the intense alternating magnetic fields inside it (which alternate at the inverter output frequency, which varies with speed). The same effect causes mains transformers to hum due to the iron core vibrating.
