A few interesting stats from the latest ORR data (all Q1 stats, ie Apr to Jun):-
Passenger numbers are 16% down on two years ago, with the fall steeper in the most recent year (-12%).
From the last pre-pandemic year (19/20), numbers are down 31%, ie nearly a third.
Now, here's the interesting thing - if you look at Heathrow Airport's passenger figures, they were 2.4%
higher in Apr to Jun 24 than in the same period for 19. So airport traffic has more than fully recovered (albeit that it is probably not as high as it would have been without the pandemic), but traffic numbers are still nearly a third lower.
As noted elsewhere, 1,131 passengers equates to an average of around 90 per 8 coach train spread across an 18'ish hour day. And whilst there will be considerable peaks and troughs, so some will be many more than that, it also means that some of those services will be carting even fewer passengers.
(Image shows a graph of Heathrow Express passenger numbers from ORR, as follows:-
