Oh we will just fight over what little food there is and end up destroying the whole planet load of life when the loser only has nukes left.

I doubt that it's possible to 'destroy the whole planet', but it's certainly possible to make it unsuitable for much of the curret flora and fauna to survive. The planet itself will still be here, waiting for the effects of human exploitation to dissipate.
