Ipswich trespass incident

Seems like a man has been on the canopies at Ipswich station since around 8.30 this morning, refusing to come down. BTP said he was in possession of a weapon (although since dropped) but still haven't managed to get him down. Lines closed and power off at the station, not a good day for GA (nor for those trying to get to Latitude this weekend).

http://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/v...bs_on_to_roof_causing_line_closures_1_2286586

Lizzie Parry in the Ipswich Star said:
Ipswich train station has been evacuated and police negotiators brought in after a man climbed on to the roof, forcing closure of the railway lines.

The man, who is wearing shorts and no shoes and was armed with a retractable knife, is standing on the roof above the main platforms.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics are at the scene after initial calls reporting the incident were received at around 8.20am.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said power to the rail lines has been disconnected and he confirmed the station had been evacuated and closed while officers deal with the incident....

The gentleman is reported to be moving around the roof and has disposed of the ladder which he was offered. I believe he has been there for over 5 hours now. He's got to come down sooner or later...

I do feel very sorry for all the passengers who have to wait while he is dealt with, and also for the staff who have to find a way of working around someone dangerous who is either mentally ill or else extremely stupid.

Well he's mentally with it enough to be worried about sunburn - has now removed his shorts, using them to cover his shoulders and stop them getting burnt!

So he's been up there since approx. 0820 this morning - no trains have passed through or departed from Ipswich since then effectively cutting the GEML in half.
Would be interesting to know the final delay minutes on this one...

Oh dear. Well, then, he shouldn't have gone shirtless on the roof of a station in a heatwave, then, should he...? Sorry, but if it turns out that he isn't mentally ill, I will have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever for his sunburn or indeed most other injuries he gets.

Rant over! Apologies.

Seven it took to get him down! Apparently he was on a part of the roof that couldn't safely take the weight of more than one person. Bizarrely enough the BTP had to clarify on Twitter that "The man was provided with water during negotiation, but was not at any point given suncream or pizza."

Better had he been provided with the sharp end of a pointed stick, a blast from a fireman's hose or a Taser to encourage him down.

It's ludicrous how the authorities pussy-foot around when the selfish actions of an individual inconvenience hundreds, if not thousands of people. It's the same when such folk are found on motorway gantries and overbridges, everything gets stopped for hours.

I think they are wary of tabloid criticism following a similar situation where a person was given a KFC meal (allegedly) to "protect his human rights".

If the quote in that article attributed to a police spokesman is accurate, then it's very poorly phrased. Using the offer a meal as a negotiating tactic, I can understand - but it's nothing to do with human rights!

It's attitudes like this to mental health issues that make people think they need to go to such extremes to make whatever point they have heard. Such attitudes are understandable when you've been inconvenienced, but they're not helpful.

Yes, shame on them for trying to save a disturbed persons life. Keep going like that and they will get a reputation for being a life saving organisation:roll:

As you may have gathered, I've no sympathy for anyone who uses such selfish disruptive activities to draw attention to themselves or to issues about which they want to protest or to publicise.

And if they don't have the mental capacity to recognise the effect they are having on others?

But that's their fault as well isn't it, as their behaviour is ultimately selfish regardless of cause...

Nice. They might have a mental illness for all you know

Perhaps they have. In fact, probably they have, since, surely, no sane person would intentionally act so selfishly.

My point is that the authorities should act more decisively to end the situation, rather than just wait it out and increase the inconvenience to significant numbers of people.

So potentially kill or cause serious injury, then ask questions later ? The person had a weapon, normally they would have been tasered but since they were on a roof they would have probably fell and been serious injury.

Its pure selfishness from both sides really. From the guy on the roof for obvious reasons and from people like you who want him removed, whether possibly dead or seriously injured. Ultimately the man came down with no one injured, that is successful.

Also, for this incident, replacement buses were difficult to source - probably down to the Latitude Festival.

I noticed and understood the difficulty in sourcing replacement buses.

The only selfishness is on the part of the person causing the incident. The authorities have the means to remove the nuisance in incidents like today's, but they choose not to act decisively. That is my complaint. If the protagonist ends up injured, or worse, they've brought it upon themselves.

Does anyone with the relevant access know what the delay minutes were (are?) for this?

I saw this! He thought he was the King of England on top of the canopies! There was a yellow helicopter up above for quite some time in the afternoon. It may have been a seaking helicopter.

What they should have done was use a seaking helicopter with a couple of Police officers hanging from the winch on ropes. Then guide them towards the male. They could then use a taser on him or cs spray to overcome him. Or use the two officers to grab him and restrain him, without even touching the roof, so the weight wouldn't affect the canopy. After they have grabbed him, lower him down to ground level. Job done! In America it wouldn't have taken this long I can tell you that now!

No, it isnt. Saying you want them down in anyway, which includes death, is pure selfishness. "They brought it upon themselves" ? So they may have chose to be born with a mental condition.

What an absolutely selfish post

And the chances are he'd probably be dead. But America knows best.

They would probably used a SWAT team from a helicopter to intercept him.

The question that everyone must be asking is - how did he get on the roof in the first place!!???

Someone will be asking big questions in relation to security at the station!! Imagine if that was a terrorist!

Really? What use would that be to a terrorist? A terrorist would be far more likely to just board a train!
