There should almost definitely be no problems, I’ve had to use them in some fairly odd places and no one has ever batted an eye. To be honest they usually just glance at the barcode and wave you through, a couple of times they’ve had a scroll and actually read it, I’ve never had someone actually scan it in the UK.
I'd agree. I've not used a global pass but only UK-only ones. All the staff I've encountered, even on obscure branch lines, have recognised the pass and either just glanced or scanned. In my experience about 50% of guards actually scan the barcode (it is usually accepted but not always) and maybe 1 in 10 actually scroll to check, even when the scan fails.

Specifically on Avanti - yes, I've used their services several times. Just walk up and get on any train you like without a reservation. Just make sure you enter the correct train into the app. You're supposed to do this before boarding but it only takes 30 to 60 seconds so you can easily do it once aboard.

I NEVER got my passes to work at any ticket barrier.

My experience is that it does work at some barriers (e.g. Avanti's), but often only the very first time the pass has been scanned. I suspect it's not been correctly configured as a ranger/rover in the system as it appears to be rejected on all further occasions.

My experience is that even from the first scan it shows up with the passback error! :p

If I remember correctly it doesn't work because it's not an Aztec code,

I can't remember if it's an aztec or QR code, but either way it is definitely not a normal UK rail barcode payload, so any handling of it will be entirely special, so I don't know if it would relate to existing products like that

It's a standard TAP TSI compatible barcode for rail passes. Not sure either whether it's aztec, QR or something else.
