I'd agree. I've not used a global pass but only UK-only ones. All the staff I've encountered, even on obscure branch lines, have recognised the pass and either just glanced or scanned. In my experience about 50% of guards actually scan the barcode (it is usually accepted but not always) and maybe 1 in 10 actually scroll to check, even when the scan fails.There should almost definitely be no problems, I’ve had to use them in some fairly odd places and no one has ever batted an eye. To be honest they usually just glance at the barcode and wave you through, a couple of times they’ve had a scroll and actually read it, I’ve never had someone actually scan it in the UK.
Specifically on Avanti - yes, I've used their services several times. Just walk up and get on any train you like without a reservation. Just make sure you enter the correct train into the app. You're supposed to do this before boarding but it only takes 30 to 60 seconds so you can easily do it once aboard.
I NEVER got my passes to work at any ticket barrier.
