Why on earth would anyone make a map of central London with north at the bottom.

If that map is facing south, then there's some logic in having what's in front of you as 'up' and what's behind you as 'down'.

I know that Greenford and Marylebone (amongst many others) still refer to NR as BR, I don't understand why, when the trouble has been gone to change announcements and maps and the majority of signage, BR still remains at a major station like marylebone, I suppose the average joe is not expected to tell the difference (or care?)

Unfortunately I can't access this from work, but if it's one of the maps designed to encourage walking in London they're all oriented so that they're in the same direction as you are when facing the map.

Some people find this much easier (including many women). Some get very confused.

Something done so rarely. The number of publicly displayed maps I have had to mentally turn in my head I thought it was being done deliberately. The map for the queues after a rugby international at the millennium stadium a few weeks ago as well as being upside down also applied to the area behind you which didn't help matters.

All of the maps on the Boris Bike sites (and most of the tourist maps) in London are like this, and much more logical it is too, especially for people who are new to the city.

I personally find it much easier - whilst I score really well on spacial awareness tests, I have no sense of direction. I'd have thought the two would be linked, but apparently not! :roll:

The Boris bike maps have the compass a bit bigger though - and a big arrow showing the way the map is orientated if I remember correctly. Much more obvious what's going on
