Information on Disruption

Currently sat waiting at Bristol Temple Meads for a train, due to the fact that there’s an incident between Bristol and Taunton.

It got me to thinking - what’s the best way to get information on cancellations and incidents? Other than tracking down a member of staff.

I used to use X, but have to admit I deleted it a while ago!

RTT can be quite good, some TOCs have better live status webpages than others (GWR's can be patchy at best)

I tend to use Realtime trains, Traksy, either journey check (regional, depending on TOC) or Gaelan's Darwin display, and keep an eye on Network Rail's twitter (ran via Firefox with an adblocker) if it's something they're posting about.

Some operators now have WhatsApp channels for broadcasting information during disruption: bit.ly/seWAchannel being a good example

Journey Check - or some sort of equivalent - seems to be the best way as it goes to each individual service/headcode. It is reliant on some manual input though.

Otherwise a combination of a good rail journey planner (like Railboard or RTT) & some mapping software (like SignalMaps, if you know what headcodes are useful to you) will set you up fine.

For bigger disruptions, even NRES will eventually list the headline details.

Last monday the wirral line was off from the first train until about 4 pm due to what merseyrail called a signal failure . When infact it was a engineering train that cut through a cable around green lane . They didn't mention the last bit .

It would be a “signal failure” though ultimately because a cable - presumably affecting signalling - was cut, preventing the normal movement of trains. You have to be concise enough with your delay reason otherwise it becomes overly long-winded.
