Reports of a large gang incident at Edmonton Green this evening involving the 18.15 Liverpool Street - Enfield Town service. Reports on Twitter say a gang smashed the side of the train up with baseball bats and then got onto the train and attacked people, stabbings also reported. All lines now blocked for a police investigation - looks like a very serious incident.

Actual details still sketchy. Hopefully no one is too badly injured.

Seems there may have been some kind of crush too as a result of panicked passengers.

Stations is closed and is now a crime scene.

Greater Anglia's Twitter abuse still got some abuse of course.....

Seems the train wasnt fully in the station when it was halted, which meant the doors didnt open.

I'm taking it that given the time of train, it would be a rather busy service too?

(Unless the Enfield line doesn't have a rush hour like most other London lines - not my area!)

Extremely busy line Mon to Fri. For those unfamiliar with the area, Edmonton Green is in the Tottenham area.

Well I'd say it's in the Edmonton area - Lower Edmonton to be precise. Lower Edmonton lies about 2.5 miles north of Tottenham.

surely higher edmonton if anything? well north of edmonton main high street?
There's no such place as 'higher edmonton'. Upper Edmonton is the area south of Lower Edmonton; between Tottenham and Lower Edmonton.

Upper Edmonton approximates the N18 postal district. Lower Edmonton approximates the N9 postal district.

That all sounds very nasty indeed, and I hope everyone recovers. It's one of the situations I do dread being involved in. From a more technical point of view, it shows the need for clearly-marked & easy-to-use emergency egress devices. Whilst they could let attackers in, they will equally allow panicking passengers out.

I wonder if the gang was "just" targeting one person who had either taken refuge on the train - or boarded but was unaware of the forthcoming attack. I guess the police are trying to find that out. This incident, whilst probably reasonably isolated, probably shows the worrying lengths some gangs go to in order to cause disorder. In fact, I guess the gang members were lucky not to have been mown down by a passing train, given that it may well take a while to bring one to a stand in such a situation, as it's so unexpected.

GA keeping quiet about this no doubt given the area and the social tensions there.

To all intents and purposes, it appears this was actually a train hijacking with the the train being brought to a stop before the station and then coming under attack.

There are also various turf wars on going in the area with named desth threats in graffiti onboard several trains.

It reminds me in fact of incident that took place just under a year ago South of Paris, that has recently come back on the news due to the impending trial.

Although no-one was hurt, at around 11pm a group of youths boarded a suburban train At Grigny station. They promptly pulled the alarm, disabling the train, and went through coach-by-coach, mugging the passengers and allegedly threatening them at knife-point.

In this case, it was only the valuables that these people lost, but still highlights the risks and what can happen if you get enough people intent on causing trouble on the railway.

(I would try and find some links, but a slow internet connection and the fact that they'll all be in French anyway means it's not really worth it!)

The local BTP Chief Superintendent has tweeted that arrests have been made. A good thing - and if those arrested turn out to be guilty, I rather hope the book is well and truly thrown at them for endangering railway safety and Byelaws offences, as well as the crimes against those onboard.

I give up

I wonder too whether those involved in this were also involved in the riots a few years back too? Just curious.

Witnesses should call the BTP on 0800 405040, quoting Incident 457. I am mainly posting this for the advice of anyone who finds this thread via Google (etc.).

Ah, you mean those people rioting in the name of Mark Duggan, a bloke none of them had probably ever heard of? I had been thinking that myself. After all, some of the more ardent supporters have promised "no justice, no peace" or what have you. I think it's pretty screwed up if it turns out that this attack on unarmed passengers on a train is in his name. Says a lot about the type of people that man was associated with. Or not, according to certain people.

Thoughts to those involved.

This has to make the news, no?

Doubt it. Could inflame things or make other people try and do something similar/cause trouble? Wouldn't take much to flare things up at the minute. Probably best to keep it quiet.

I actually don't think many people give a stuff about Mark Duggan, especially not most of the community that probably wisely decide to stay quiet. A man who was most likely on his way to kill someone and simply messed up when chucking away a gun while confronted by armed police.

The family seem to have failed to get much support, and certainly no riot, and I expect this is just another gang related incident (so I guess that's the only link with Duggan). In fact, I expect what the family now want is compensation.

Is it just me or is it a bit unnerving that something as serious-sounding as this could be all hushed up and not reported on in the news? Since I moved to London last month, Edmonton Green has been one of my local stations (although I tend to use it mainly on Sundays when there are fast trains all day; otherwise Silver Street or Angel Road are marginally more convenient) and it would be nice to know what's going on! Is it just that Edmonton is viewed as a rough area (personally I think it's a nice place!) and so it's not really news for something like that to happen here? If it happened at a Zone 1 station would it be big news?

If it happened anywhere other than on a train, would it make the news? Certainly not the national TV news. Probably not the London regional TV news.

So not 'hushed up', just not big enough a story... yet. Doubtless it'll make the local media (and possibly London-wide media) tomorrow.

The station (and nearby bus station) have 'history' in terms of stabbings.

Yes that sounds about right I suppose - in my head I'm comparing it to Northern Ireland where disruption to rail lines or bus routes from hijackings and the like would generally be fairly big news, even if it was the riot season and happening quite frequently. But London's a very big place in comparison with Northern Ireland so I suppose the newsworthiness is relative.

no chance of justice being served in any incident of this sort of nature. I would have had such hopes - but I've given up now!

Goodness, you chose an ‘interesting’ part of London to set up a new home in! I'm afraid Edmonton has a very rough reputation indeed – in fact I'd say the whole A10/A1010 corridor from zone 6 to 2 is rather… problematic. (I say this as someone who also lives in it, not by choice, though at least it's a roof over my head.)
